The Online Battle of the Year: Playstation Network Vs. Xbox Live

Jeff Schuman
Ever wonder what one key difference is between Sony's Playstation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox Live? The one difference is live play. The Sony company has always been in the shadow of Xbox Live. Their version of Xbox Live was never up to par with the Microsoft version. With their new system, the Sony Playstation 3, all that has changed.

Xbox Live has been updated to include a shop. In the Microsoft shop you can download arcade games, download demos for games, rent movies, download new content for games and wallpapers for your menu. The Sony Playstation 3 now has it's own shop, the Playstation Store. In this store you can download old and new games, download new content for the games, and put your old Playstation games onto your system directly through the store.

Xbox Live allows you to play and communicate with friends from around the world. In games you can play with up to 18 people. The PS3 took this to a new level. On the Playstation Network you can still communicate with friends, however, you can play with up to 40 people in one game. This will allow for more realistic and more chaotic games.

In the new Playstation Network you are able to surf the web. This feature turns the Sony Playstation 3 into a computer. You can surf with up to six Internet tabs open at once. This is a feature that is not available on Microsoft's Xbox Live, and Microsoft has shown no interest in adding it.

Some may find the fact that Microsoft is charging you $50 a year to use their Xbox Live is outrageous. This has been solved by Sony. The Playstation Network is free to whoever owns a PS3. All you have to do is connect to the Internet and you are playing live against people from around the world. The only cost is you have to pay for the Internet bill, which you are already doing.

Sony is trying to get it's Internet to a level where it can finally compete with Microsoft's Xbox Live. This is a hard level to reach since Xbox has dominated the live gaming level for years. Sony is starting to become up to the level and in the next couple of years we could see both systems tied at the same level.

think that the ps3 is just a better value and since nowadays people are in tough times here in america, people would go with the ps3 where if u want to use the online, its free but the xbox charges 50 dollars a month. clearly with the ps3's blu ray disc reader and the built in free wifi, its a better deal. But these are just my opinions

    Here's a comparison-
    PS3:
    Came out with amazing games
Free online (best things in life are free)
Mature gaming community (less little kids)
    Better shop (honestly)
    XBox:
    Large gaming community
$50(you get what you pay for)
    Better mic
All the other features are kind of useless
    I personally like the PS3.

i dont mind either, but i find theres abit more of a community in xbl, i dont really get that in psn.

while i would choose the ps3 over the 360 any day (i have both), i would rather be on xbox live. i dont get kicked off, microphone quality is not sh**ty, you can stay chatting in game, out of game, anytime. but you pay for the clarity of service with xbox. i would pay $50 to playstation gladly if the chat/invite/party were half as good as live.

I'm sorry J, but I fail to see how being able to jump into anyone of my friend's game at the click of a button or being able to chat with them regardless of what they're playing can be considered useless.

Just because you don't need (or actually, think don't need because you don't have it) doesn't mean that it useless for everyone else.

    @wr3kl3ss

no offence but the features you stated are useless. i will take not have to pay £50 a year any day.

I have both consoles and I use my PS3 as a blu-ray player and my 360 as a game console....nuff said....

On XBOX live you can create parties with up to 8 players. Each player can be playing a differnt game and still chatting with each other. Can the PS3 do that? On Live you can watch movies with your friends through Netflix. Can the PS3 do that? On live you can send invites to all the friends in your party with the click of a button, no matter what game they're playing they can accept your invite, pop in their disk, and jump into the lobby of any game your playing. Can the PS3 do that. On Live you can play 1 vs 100 live and actually compete against other players around the world for real prizes such as downloadable arcade games and MS points which can be used in the Live Marketplace. Does the PS3 have this feature? On Live you can see exactly what your friends are playing down to what map and what game type such as "friend is playng Free for All on Makin Day". From there you can jump into the match with them if there is room. Can the PS3 do that? Maybe it can now I don't know. I have both
