The Only Pits This Cherry Knows Are the Dark Storms of Revelation: A Review of Black Cherry Porter from Short's Brewing Company

While hibernation weather isn't too far off into the future it hasn't quite arrived just yet here in southern Michigan. As dreary as it is outside with the seasonal rains, which I thoroughly enjoy, the northern display of blue lightning tonight signaled that autumn hasn't quite given up her throne either. Though I'm not quite in the mood for a porter this one sounded far too good to pass up another day.

As you may or may not know, Michigan is the cherry capital and especially the northern climes where Short's Brewing Co. resides and so it's pretty much expected that every Michigan brewers will incorporate the ingredient into their elixirs. Seeing as it is winter 6 months of the year up in the Traverse Bay area it makes sense to squeeze the juice into a cold weather brew. This beer is a perfect combination of both climate and resources.

A hearty porter which is strong enough to flap your flapper but not blow out the pup tent. The cherry flavor is as seamless as the frozen snow on the shore of the Great Lakes and the only tart you are going to conjure up with this fine porter is the Eskimo lass in the corner stool begging for more Budweiser on her fishmonger's salary. Are there even Eskimos in Michigan? Who cares! There aren't any sasquatches, UFOs or red dwarves either but people from these parts keep harping on the subjects unabated. The black panther roaming the countryside is a whole other matter. We shall get into that on some other black day in December mycompatriots.
