The Only Way to Do Spring Break in Cancun

Going Wild, Staying Safe, and Getting the Most Out of Your Stay

1. Because the legal drinking age in Mexico is only 18, most people get so excited that they're able to easily buy alcohol that they don't care about how much it costs. Often times in the hotel bars and bars nearby a beer can cost $4-5. To cut down on costs, take the bus to walmart and stock up on drinks then bring them back to the hotel. Mexican beers like corona and dos equis costs significantly less than in the US.

2. When you hear people say 'don't pee in the streets', they mean it. Although I've witnessed on numerous occasions people urinating openly while walking down the street to clubs and bars, some aren't so lucky. If caught, be prepared to either fork over a hefty bribe, or spend a night in jail plus about $150 USD. From what I hear, you DO NOT want to go to prison in Mexico.

3. During your stay in Cancun, you will no doubt be offered drugs fairly often. No matter how tempted you may be in your inebriated state, you must resist. People are often set up by street dealers and vendors at the flea markets. Some one will offer you something, you buy it, then a few seconds later you're busted by la policia that was standing nearby the whole time. Although it's not always like this, it's better to keep these activities state-side.

4. After a long night (and day) of drinking, partying, and what ever else you do, you will have worked up quite a hunger. By that time you've probably already seen the many Domino's pizza scooters riding all over the city. These guys are not only fairly cheap but fun. When you see a pizza guy coming you flag him down like you're trying to hail a taxi. Usually they only have pepperoni, cheese, and breadsticks. They'll start out high but let them know you're not having it and keep haggling. They'll eventually settle and give you a pretty good deal. It's not uncommon to get two medium pizzas and breadsticks for around $15 USD.

5. Nobody wants to walk 3 miles to the club after doing tequila shots at the hotel. Cancun has a 24 hr taxi and bus service. The buses are only 65 pesos, but after a certain time only a few are running and its gets quite difficult to catch one that isn't completely packed. If you do happen to be able to get on a bus at around 3 a.m., be ready to get up close and personal with a group of drunk sweaty strangers, just like you. When you decide trying to catch a bus is hopeless, there will always be a plethora of taxis waiting to take you wherever you want. Always haggle a price beforehand; the drivers always tell you a price higher than they will accept.

6. Although it doesn't happen too often, there are people out there just looking to start some trouble with unsuspecting tourists. If someone ever tries to start a fight or hassling you, just walk away. Often times, just like the drug dealers, they're working with the police. Once you hit them and a fight erupts the police will come out of no where and nab you, though its probably nothing a few thousand pesos couldn't take care of.

7. Pace yourself. I know its great and exciting when you first arrive and you just want to get crazy and do it all, but you'll have plenty of time for everything. It's no fun when its only the third day of your 7 night stay and you're already wore out ready to go home. During the daytime try exploring some of the other adventure options Cancun has to offer, such as snorkeling and para-sailing.

8. Don't get too drunk. You gotta know when to slow it down a bit. Its no fun waking up in the median at 6 a.m. only to find your all of your money is gone and you're covered in puke, which brings up my next tip.

9. Never carry more money with you than you're willing to lose. Keep the rest of your traveler's checks, credit cards, and cash in your hotel safe. Not only is this a good budgeting strategy, it also minimizes your losses in the event you get robbed.

10. The last and most important is never travel alone. Always make sure you're walking to the next club with someone you know and where ever you are, make sure your friends are still there with you. Since most people on spring break don't use their cell phones due to high international charges it can be quite difficult to find your friends if you've lost them.

That's all you need to know to have spring break like it should be. So to shorten it all up: No drugs, no fighting, don't pee in the streets, stay with your friends, keep the valuables in the safe, and of course-have fun.
