The Orange Crush! Philadelphia Flyers Head to the Stanley Cup Finals
Philadelphia Flyers and the Chicago Blackhawks
The Canadians Brian Gionta would open the scoring just :59 into play and get Montreal rolling quickly after not scoring a goal in the previous game.
Up to this point the Canadians have been perfect in games when facing elimination and went on to win the previous two series against the number one seeded Washington Capitals and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins. They trailed in both of those series 3-2 before winning games six and seven.
But things would soon change with the Canadians on a power play and with a loose puck heading back into the Montreal zone a foot race was on between a charging forward Mike Richards and defenseman Roman Hamrlik. Richards had a step on Hamrlik and this made Jaroslav Halak come out and try to play the puck before the two reached it. However they all reached the puck at the same time and would collide as the puck would trickle by all of them Richards would be the first to reach it and tuck it into the empty net to tie the game at one.
Period two would see the Philadelphia Flyers best outburst of the game with Arron Asham and Jeff Carter scoring two goals in a span of just 1:24 and a 3-1 Flyers lead.
The 3-1 lead would carry over into the third period and Scotty Gomez would make it a one goal game giving the Canadians some life but that life would soon end with time winding down and Jeff Carter would back hand an empty net goal home and put to bed the eight seeded Montreal Canadians Cinderella playoff run.
So here they are the seventh seeded Philadelphia Flyers who didn't clinch a playoff spot till the last day of the regular season with an overtime shoot out win over the New York Rangers. Then making history becoming only the third NHL team to come from a 0-3 series hole and winning it. Are the Philadelphia Flyers the team of destiny?
It's the Chicago Black Hawks and the Philadelphia Flyers for the 2010 Stanley Cup, two teams who haven't won since 1961 (Black Hawks) and 1975 (Flyers). History will be made!

Post a CommentWhats most remarkable about the Flyers isn't the win against the Canadiens. Its the comeback against the Bruins in Round 2 of the playoffs. That series was the momentum booster for the Canadiens round 3 series. It will be tough for the broad street bullies to be Chicago for the cup. Stranger things have happened in this years playoffs.
Nice reporting. I've been a die hard fan since well, at least the early 70's. I remember those two Cups well, all of the partying and celebrating along Frankford Ave as well as South Philly into Independence Mall. It was so great to watch these guys get as far as they have. They are a feisty bunch and they deserve to have it all. Good Luck to them.
