The Origin of Spinning

The Indoor Cycling Movement

Laura Brady
Johnny G is the creator of Spinning, the original indoor cycling training program that is now widely popular in the U.S. and abroad. Spinning is an incredible workout program that incorporates different aspects of bicycle training, music, mind and body connection, and visualization and breathing techniques. How and why did Johnny G invent this incredibly motivating, challenging and inspirational program?

Johhny G was a competitor in a bike race called "The Race Across America." It was an incredibly grueling race beginning in L.A. and ending in New York. Obviously the training needed for this type of race and activity was mind-boggling. One dark night while training Johnny G was almost killed by a car. His wife was pregnant and he was worried for his safety and the well being of his family. He decided to begin training indoors, at least for his night training. The fact that he could do the kind of training he needed for this race indoors gave birth to the beginning of the Spinning program in his mind. However he had a few limitations to overcome first.

He had to create a unique bike that would work indoors and still let him train his heart rate, endurance, cardiovascular ability and strength. He began with an ordinary stationary bike and added a seat post that would slide back and forth so it could fit the individual better. He also took off the bike's computer which showed calories burned, miles biked, etc. The information on these computers was not very accurate or helpful to the type of training he hoped to teach. He also created a weighted fly wheel with a fixed gear which gave the rider the feeling of being on the "real" road and the ability to quickly and directly add resistance on or off. The original Spinner bike was created.

He eventually fine-tuned the program to include music so that the rider could feel the rhythm, tempo, and timing. This helps with visualization techniques, motivation, and inspiration. The music and the encouragement to find the mind-body connection while cycling is what gives Spinning its unique focus.

Spinning premiered as a class in Venice, CA in 1992. It's owned and copyrighted by Mad Dogg Athletics and is the original indoor cycling program. There are other indoor cycling programs but only the Johnny G/Mad Dog Athetics are called Spinning. Try it today for a superior workout. Because the individual can work at their own fitness level and experience any person is welcome in Spinning class, regardless of fitness level. You'll be hooked after your first experience.
