The Original Maddawg Interviews a Former Novaffl Star

Today, we have a Novaffl VIP, famous for bull-rushes similar to the Jordanian Bull (cutters) who made a habit of menacing quarterbacks in and throughout the Novaffl landscapes. This is a follow-up interview to my colleague San Fran's quite frankly article, to the infamous Ty Bond, that is short and to the point.

Ty has an interesting history and fan base, one so extensive people actually thought he was playing in Season III long after he retired.

As many of you know he played on the Conquest on seasons I, II and a brief appearance on Season III. He was a defensive lineman, but quickly tired of the position, wishing for more of an impact role. After a brief appearance with the Hawks, Ty decided to concentrate on larger than life Semi-Pro contests.

Ty was recognized as an outstanding player in Novaffl, but he gives hope to young Novafflians hoping to bridge their semi-contact flag football success into something more.

How did you come to find out about Novaffl?

Gene from the NoNamers told me about the league.

What impressed you the most about Novaffl?

Everyone out there just wanted to have fun. In the beginning, there wasn't any crying, bullshit, or threats. People just wanted to ball.
What team did you join?

I started out with the Conquest and played with them on and off for 3 seasons.

What made you decide to eventually leave the league and move onto your current spot at the D.C. Generals?

I just wanted to try something different. I have been playing flag in various leagues in this area for the past 7 years. I just felt that it was time to move on and give myself a new challenge.

What position do you play with the D.C. Generals?

I am an outside linebacker. Most likely I will be playing Will but I am having much more fun at Sam because it is a much more physical position.

How many games do they play a season, and is this enough football for Ty Bond?

Our season is only 5 games, but there is a lot of practice time and more than enough hitting in practice to make up for the lack of games. Honestly, I'm not sure if I can take the rigors of a full season. We start in San Diego, then we have games against Carolina, NYPD, Philly PD, and a California police department team. We use proceeds from our games to donate to charities like the Washington DC Chapter of Concerns of Police Surviviors (DC-COPS) and the Washington Hospital Burn Center. We count on individual sponsors and donations to help fund the cost of our team. If anyone wants to sponsor or help out in any way, let me know.

How does an inspired Novafflian get into a league like the D.C. Generals?

Unfortunately, the DC Generals are restricted to police and fire personnel. However, this area is loaded with semi-pro squads. We just scrimmaged a local semi-pro squad in Waldorf. Finding one to join should not be difficult.

In terms of competitiveness and skill, how would Novafflian players fare in D.C. General full contact football?

It is hard to say. Flag and tackle are two completely different games. Take me for example, I consider myself an elite player in the NOVAFFL, but on the Generals, I'm merely average. I have a lot to learn to make the transition and play the way I know I'm capable of. There are so many talented football players in the NOVAFFL. It's just that things become a little different when you have an animal out there waiting to take your head off when you catch the ball.

Are there any Novaffl players that could make the transition to a Full-Contact squad like the D.C. Generals? If so, name a few and why they like Ty could step to the next level?

Of course. Rum would be an absolute monster beside me at linebacker, and given his experience, skill and pedigree, I'm sure that a fit Grover would have his way with any safety, backer, or corner in our league. The top linemen like Bri, Nick, and the massive guy from the Deckers (can't remember his name) would still be very successful in our league as well.

Do you have any plans of re-visiting Novaffl, if not explain why? Take this time to explain why you retired from Novaffl.

I'll probably come back and play for someone in the fall to try to stay in shape. Our season ends in May. I love playing the game too much to just sit down and watch.

What do you think of Novaffl's victory over a rival flag football league, in JoeFergSports? Would you support Novaffl in an exhibition game against other local franchises, even the D.C. generals?

I didn't like all the extracurricular activities during and after the game, but I was very proud to see you guys come out with the win there.

Do you think Conquest will thrive in the JoeFergSports league (Athar registered them), where the moderators are on that whistle, like John Madden on Tom Brady's schlong? Considering the Conquest is sometimes prone to infractions, do you predict success or failure in the Ferg league?

I am not going to comment on the Quest. This is supposed to be about me dammit! BTW, Madden is the president of the Brett Favre fan club.

Can you explain why the Conquest, withdrew from Novaffl -- but please feel free to refrain from answering this question, if Algie is in a better position.

Does your son have any promise of football prowess?

Kinda too early to tell right now. I see that he shares the same passion for sports as his dad. I just hope he is more talented. I'll support him no matter what he decides to do (unless he decides to start dancing or something).

What are your next steps, specifically, are you going to play in the Generals as well as Novaffl, or any other leagues?

I am going to try to make it through this season and see where it takes me. Hopefully I will be healthy enough at the end of the year to come out and play on someone's squad in the fall.

Can Ty play hoops, if so, why don't you and Algie show up to NovaBBL on Thursday Nights? Algie showed up one time and found himself sayin, "I got next" quite a bit, could Ty shoot the Rock?

Didn't know that I was invited. I would definitely like to come and check ya'll out on the court. I consider myself to be a pretty good athlete, but I am much better at football than I am at basketball. So to answer your question, I am a below average basketball player.

Did Novaffl help prepare you with your current football skills?

Definitely. Running and wrestling with Gene, Rum, and Bri have definitely made me a better and stronger player.
