The best actor award is presented at the annual Academy Awards ceremony by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). It is an Academy Award of Merit that honors the actor whose performance is deemed the most outstanding in the previous year's film industry. Actors are nominated by actors and actresses who are Academy members; however the winners are selected by the entire Academy.

The nominees for the 82nd Academy Awards were:

  • Jeff Bridges for his role as Bad Blake in "Crazy Heart"
  • George Clooney for his role as Ryan Bingham in "Up in the Air"
  • Colin Firth for his role as George in "A Single Man"
  • Morgan Freeman for his role as Nelson Mandela in "Invictus"
  • Jeremy Renner for "The Hurt Locker"

And the Oscar goes to...

Jeff Bridges!

In his acceptance speech, he thanked his mom and dad. He then told how his dad, Lloyd Bridges, taught him the basics of acting and how much he loved show biz. He stated, "This is honoring them [his parents] as much as me." He continued to thank others, ending with a heartfelt thank you to his children and to his wife, Susan, of 33 years. Susan and Jeff met while he was filming "Rancho Deluxe."

Before the awards ceremony, Jeff was asked by a TV Guide reporter what the Oscar win would mean to him. He replied, "It would be beautiful."

Congratulations on a beautiful night to a well-deserving actor!
