The best actress award is presented at the annual Academy Awards ceremony by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). It is an Academy Award of Merit that honors the actress whose performance is deemed the most outstanding in the previous year's film industry. Actresses are nominated by actors and actresses who are Academy members; however the winners are selected by the entire Academy.

The nominees for the 82nd Academy Awards were:

  • Sandra Bullock for her role as Leigh Anne Tuohy in "The Blind Side"
  • Helen Mirren for her role as Sofya Tolstaya in "The Last Station"
  • Carey Mulligan for her role as Jenny in "An Education"
  • Gabourney Sidibe for her role as Precious in "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire"
  • Meryl Streep for her role as Julia Child in "Julie & Julia"

And the Oscar goes to....

Sandra Bullock!

In her acceptance speech, she thanked those closest to her. But first, she began with, "Did I really win or did I just wear you all down?" Amid tears and smiles, she wove in a few humorous remarks which really connected with the crowd, like "George Clooney threw me in a pool once. I'm still holding a grudge."

This was Bullock's first nomination for an Oscar.

Congratulations, Sandra Bullock, a well-deserving actress!
