The Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, recognizes excellence in the film industry. Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards have been in existence since its first show on May 16, 1929. Actors, writers, directors and other professionals will be honored for outstanding achievements within the 2009 calendar year at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. Actors Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin will host the ceremony.

According to WhatTheTrend.com, the Oscars is a hot topic among tweeters on the popular social networking site Twitter.com. Here's what tweeters are tweeting as we countdown to the 2010 Academy Awards show:

Lisarinna: Off to the Oscars! Just kidding. http://tweetphoto.com/13633181

Starbb: Until I can actually go to the Oscars, I will dress up to watch it. J

RichardRoeper: I still don't get why the media have to dress formal to cover the Oscars. I didn't have to wear a Bulls uniform when I covered the NBA Playoffs.

Geisha_boy: Yay I have today off & I get to watch the Oscars!

RyanSeacrest:http://twitpic.com/178omk At Oscars, producers were up all night changing show around. Details soon on E!

DimitySO: Will everybody be following the #Oscars fashion on Twitter? Good people to follow if you are @fuggirls @ryanseacrest @stylewatchmag.

Wook44: Mahalo Will be live blogging Oscars 2010 Red Carpet http://post.ly.RLUN.

Wildfacts: Sylvia Mile had the shortest performance nominated for an Oscar. It lasted only six minutes.

Actorjpleasant: Lee Daniels is the 1st African American director to be nominated for best picture at Oscars.

Some predict awards for Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Avatar and others. Says Sandra Bullock before the ceremony, "I'm coming to this so wide-eyed and thankful and happy."

If predictions are accurate, she'll be thankful and happy by the end of this spectacular award night.

There's some disappointment as ABC has withdrawn their network from 3 million Cablevision subscribers in the New York/New Jersey areas today. ABC has been broadcasting the Oscars since 1976, with a ten-year stint from 1960-1970, and is under contract to televise the show until 2014.

TTZqq24: Sad I'll be missing out on Oscars (and Lost!) due to the greed of networks and cable providers.

While not everyone is excited about the Academy Awards, many people are. One tweeter sums it up well with a quote from writer Stephen King:

Andremanvelyan: "People who LIKE going to the movies LOVE the Oscars, but people who LOVE going to the movies only LIKE the Oscars."-Stephen King
