The Outsourcing of America

Stephanie Michael
A lot of people all over the world are affected by the outsourcing phenomenon. America out sources to India, they outsource to China, and on and on. It's easy to automatically blame the person replacing you. It's easy to be angry because you're ignorant of the situation leading to them assuming your duties. They outsourcer does not strive to become the replacement of some average Joe who lives 8,000 miles away. They just needed a job. In today's economic climate I can understand how they feel. Many people have fallen on hard times because of a lack of work. Ill bet anything the Indians and Chinese are just the same.

To the outsourcer from India who took my job:

I want you to know that I'm not upset. I want you to know I'm fascinated by you. I love how efficiently you perform your work functions and how you have questions like I did when I started performing that task. I'll admit that when I first heard I was being replaced I was a little scared and hurt. Then I realized that you didn't hurt me and that what you really did was give me the opportunity to learn a new aspect of my department.

When I hear others discussing the situation I cant help but notice the negativity in their tone. They are quick to blame you for problems in the process and act like you reject paperwork to make them suffer. I know that really they are afraid and don't know how to express that. I wish they could open their minds this holiday season and understand that we are all the same. We are all human and we all want the same thing; a secure job, a safe home, and the love of our families.

I want to speak with you and know you as my co-worker. I want to understand your culture and your everyday life. What are your likes and dislikes? What do you do for fun? Do you like your job? What is your family like? These are questions I yearn to ask. These are the questions that will never be answered. Procedure doesn't allow for communication between call centers. Procedure doesn't allow for human interaction.

I want to wish you luck! I know that you will be successful in anything you try. I hope that others begin to understand that you are just earning a living. You are a person just like they are; just like me.

I'm going to teach all over the world. I want to experience the things that other people just dream about. I want to see the wonders of man and of nature. I will learn something new everyday. I'll do it all...  View profile

I think you have a really great perspective on this. I think people often forget that when jobs are outsourced, the new person doing the job didn't personally take it away. It's a matter of a company changing locations to save money. In my opinion, outsourcing becomes a problem when businesses move to another country where people are treated in a way that would be considered unacceptable in the developed world. But I don't think the people doing the work should be blamed.

Maybe not more efficent than me =D But they are highly motivated and intelligent. It seems like we have pretty good competition (even if the price was not an issue)
