The Pack's Based Boys Early Album Review

Is the Pack Worth $16 on Its Full-Length Debut?

The Reviewer
The Pack is a Berkeley, California-based rap group. The group was found and signed by Bay Area legend Too $hort. The Pack is made up of members Young L, Stunna Man, Lil Uno and Lil B. The group had very successful singles Vans and I'm Shinin', on its debut EP last year and is capitalizing by releasing its debut, full-length album, Based Boys. The group is definitely different than other rap acts because it is so heavily based in the skateboard culture. So will The Pack be able to sustain its success or just falter on its new disc?

The first single off of Based Boys is In My Car produced by group member Young L. The song is very catchy and definitely different than most of mainstream hip hop tracks. The track is just very different featuring numerous sound effects. The raps featured on the track are not much different than what you would expect from young hip hop artists. The repetitive chorus also adds to the appeal of the track.

The second single off the album is I Look Good also produced by group member Young L. The track is definitely a club track. The beat is not like other tracks that are out today. The beat and melodic structure of the song are just completely different than what you would expect. The Pack seems to have come up with a trademark style that works for them.

On Booty Bounce Bopper, The Pack are joined by their mentor Too $hort. The track is produced by Young L with additional production from Too $hort. The song is a typical Too $hort track. The track is not one of the strongest tracks on the album.

Also featured on the album are The Pack's previous hits Vans and I'm Shinin'. Vans is a very catchy track the song is what help propel The Pack to stardom. The song has several elements of snap music popularized by Mr. Collipark. I'm Shinin' follows the trademark style The Pack have carved out for themselves and features a loose vocal sample of the Rockwell and Michael Jackson hit single Somebody's Watching Me.

The Pack showcases its own individual style on its full-length debut album, Based Boys. The album also features The Pack's two biggest singles, Vans and I'm Shinin',adding to the album with new tracks. Overall, Based Boys gets 7 out 10 stars. If you're a fan of The Pack, make sure you pick up its full-length debut, Based Boys, when it is in stores on October 30.
