The Pagan Homeschool: Where is All the Curriculum?

Is it Hiding in Cyberspace?

Let me start by saying that I don't believe that all curriculum should be based on religion. I have been homeschooling for almost eleven years. I have been pagan for over twenty years. I would say that makes me a pagan homeschooler. Paganism isn't a current topic of study at our house but my beliefs to infuence my teaching. Still after all these years of homeschooling I still have the same doubts I did as when I started. I think that is true for most parents. I have tried several different curriculums. My kids hated 95% of it. So I keep looking for new and better things to try. I don't feel upto the task of dealing with christian based curriculums and the non-religious ones we have tried are just to boring and not indusive to my children's style of learning. Worksheets are the enemy at my house.

This year we will be trying a Waldorf based curriculum. I can hear some of you screaming and some of you clapping. I know it is not pagan, curriculums don't seem to come that way. While I'm not going to be following the curriculum to the letter, I will be using it as a guide. I will be customizing it to fit my beliefs and my kids. After I get going on it I will be blogging about. I hope to be able to help and inspire other pagan parents. The books I will be using are "Spiritual Syllabus by Alan Whitehead". I know this will mean more work for me. I will have to plan out all the lessons, but I feel it will be worth it.

Will there ever be a pre-packaged pagan curriculum? I don't know. Paganism is too diverse for one boxed curriculum. Are pagan parents currently out there building their own curriculums or only un-schooling? As parents will we be able to speak up and tell curriculum publishers what we want? I don't know. On days like today, I'm left feeling like the outsider. Being pagan puts me outside of the mainstream. Beging a homeschooler puts me outside of the mainstream. Being a pagan homeschooler puts me way outside most streams. I think that maybe a feeling shared by other pagan homeschoolers. I think that if I had the skills I would make teaching aids for pagan parents. Maybe they are already out there lurking in cyberspace waiting to be discovered.

YES!!!! We are out there!!! I am an equally troubled, frustrated, independent pagan homeschooler! Don't feel alone!

I'm not a Pagan, but I do know that there is a book on Amazon that might be able to help you out. I believe it's called "Homeschooling for Pagans", or the "Pagan Homeschooling Handbook". I saw it a couple of years ago when I was buying homeschooling books before we started.

We've done a lot of research in the curriculum arena as a Modern Pagan family who also has some humanist views we are taking all the free Pagan curriculums we could find and blending what pertains to our family values, with movingbeyondthepage.com and globalvillageschool.org we love both of the curriculums and together, with outside resources and activities have found a wonderful eclectic curriculum for us. As you can see we do use a curriculum, but also use many games, manipulative, and field trips (eeboo, plantoys, haba, imagiplay, melissa and Doug, greenfeet.com). Just wanted to share what we do.

    Cheers!

Hey Tara, it is a little late, but in Maryland I use a very Pagan friendly state approved umbrella group that is fairly cheap called Many Paths of Natural Learning. The leader/founder of the group is Tuesdi Harmon and the website is www.mpnl.org. She does not provide curriculum, but she does provide supervision, interfaces with the state and plans a lot of free or reduced price activities. You can join the support group or even just the e-list to get a feel for the group.

Tara- I can't comment about Goddess Moon Circles. I haven't checked them out for like 6 or 7 years. You may be better off choosing a stat approved secular curriculum and then adding in your own lessons. That is what we are currently doing.

Do you know anything about Goddess moon circles. I was considering them for my daughter, but I am not sure how legitimate they are. There is a lot of controversy regarding the person who runs it and scamming people out of their money. But they also have on their "church" web page about being a 501 c 3 organization. but they are not found in the irs search. maryland's homeschool laws either require you to deal directly with their board of educations reps or use a maryland certified homeschool or bonafide church program. so i decided to go with goddess moon circles. their website showed an excellent curriculum. but after trying to contact them, the address has changed, they only accept payment through postal money orders not paypal, and the other two complaints posted on the web were in regards to 1 parents child having to repeat the same grade due to goddess moons inability to keep the records, and another said they the curriculum was nothing more than free stuff posted on the web. this
