The frail old body of former Philippine President Corazon "Cory" Aquino gave way to colon cancer, which she had long been suffering from. With her demise, the country has lost one great leader who has steadily fought for the country against corruption in government.
It may be remembered that Cory was the widow of Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino who was assassinated during the regime of former President Ferdinand Marcos (also now deceased). She rose into power in 1986 through a massive but bloodless uprising called the People Power, which was participated in by people from all walks of life--including the church and the business district.
After her term, Mrs. Aquino immediately stepped down and continued the legacy of her husband by being constantly on the lookout for corrupt practices in government. Her opinion in matters were well considered by many. But her passing just gives the whole country a reason to mourn--they not only lost one good leader but someone who has the heart to fight for justice in the government system.
Mrs. Aquino had been fearless in standing up for what is right. That is why even in her death, people are mourning everywhere.
Goodbye, Mrs. Aquino. This is a tribute to you. You are well remembered.
I just hope though that somebody will rise up, too, and continue your legacy.
