When you arrive at Pennsbury Manor and after you purchase your tickets, you can look around the building at the wonderful antiques. You will then watch a brief film about William Penn. The film is a great introduction to this history of William Penn and gives background information to the manor and his life in early Pennsylvania. After the film a friendly tour guide takes you to the outbuildings and describes for you what life was like in the early 1700's.
One of the best things about the tour, is the recreated colonial cottage. It is complete with a bedstead, hearth and even a loft that the children and servants slept in. There are many outbuildings at the site in addition to the cottage. There is a smokehouse, icehouse, joyner's house, a barn with animals and a bake and brew house. After you visit the outside buildings you are then taken into the manor itself. You will feel as if you've stepped back in time! The guide will give you lots of information about how the household was ran and you get to see where everybody's bedroom was, where they are their meals and more.
When the tour is over, you are free to look around on your own outside. The manor is right along the Delaware river and there's even a hollowed out tree that the Indians to the area used as a canoe. Don't forget to take a look at William Penn's barge! You can also visit with the animals and a lot of times there will be volunteers demonstrating their skills of the period. If you'd like to remember your visit to Pennsbury Manor, make sure to visit their Manor Shop. There are plenty of souveniers and even antiques for you to purchase.
At different times through the year there are plenty of events going on at the manor. These are usually on the weekends and include hearth cooking, beer brewing, spinning and other historic trades. Best of all is the Colonial Crossroads festival once a year in September. During the summer there is Colonial Camp for children. If you'd really like to step back into time, families can sign up for the 17th Century Overnight Program. You get to wake up to a 17th century morning, wear period clothing and perform routine chores at the manor!
There is plenty to discover and experience at the Pennsbury Manor! Make sure to visit and if you'd like to come back for more, you can get a membership or become a volunteer! Either way, it's a piece of history you will never forget.
