The People's Champion: The Rock

TheChosen1
Wrestling fans will forever remember The Rock. He was in a class of his own. He combined charisma, with good looks, mic skills and in-ring ability to catapult himself into stardom.

The Rock's Promos were magnificent. They were executed properly and made a good connection with the crowd. They were mostly funny as well. You could even hear the crowd participate and cheer during his promos. His mic skills were truly awesome.

My favorite The Rock match of all time is the Icon vs. Icon match at Wrestlemania X8 against Hollywood Hulk Hogan. The match was a dream match that I never figured will ever happen since I never knew WCW would go out of business and I never knew that Hulk Hogan would return to the WWE. I guess never say never in this business.

The match was a classic. It started off with Hulk Hogan showing everyone why he is the man. He dominated The Rock early and showed off his vaunted strength. Rocky was persistent however. After three Rock Bottom maneuvers, he was triumphant and The Rock and Hollywood Hulk Hogan found a mutual respect for each other. It is a fitting end since The Rock was a Hulkamaniac while growing up.

I'm sure it was a dream come true for The Rock to be in the ring with Hulk Hogan. Just imagine competing or playing with your idol. This was probably the same feeling Triple H got when being with Ric Flair or Michael Jordan got when he went up against Magic Johnson, Julius Erving and Larry Bird. It's surreal.

The Rock after all, came from humble beginnings. He was living in a trailer park and slept in a stained mattress. He didn't have much money and simply ate spaghetti and tuna.

The Rock could be considered as one of the greatest wrestlers ever. He has fought all the greats including Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, Triple H, Mick Foley, Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Unfortunately for the millions and millions of The Rock's fans chanting his name, The Rock was lured away from the wrestling business by the bright lights of Hollywood. He has starred in numerous television shows and movies and seems to be making a name for himself as an actor. I doubt we'll ever see some go one on one with The Great one in the squared circle again.

I really wish The Rock would return to the squared circle again. The WWE is stale right now. It has been so since The Rock and Austin stopped wrestling. The WWE truly needs a shot in the arm.

The DVD scores a high mark in terms of production values and in terms of match selection. The matches selected were very good and very entertaining. The video however is no proper biography by any stretch of the imagination. It shows bits and pieces every now and then but is more of a compilation of matches. I would like to see more about the man behind The Rock not just a marathon of matches.

What is missing are thoughts of The Rock on his own career. Where are those thought of other wrestlers as well? I mean, they were able to do that for the Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior video so why not for The Rock? I would love to hear comments from Triple H, Steve Austin and Mick Foley.

Overall, the DVD is a good addition to any wrestling video collection. I enjoyed reliving those The Rock moments such as the backstage segment with the New World Order where he made fun of Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall and The Rock strumming his guitar and singing. The nostalgia factor cannot be overlooked.

I recommend this video to the millions and millions of The Rock's fans. We may never ever see him back in the squared circle again but at least we could watch the highlights of this great in-ring performer when we choose. Definitely worth it.

I was a mega wrestling fan back in the 80s, got to see many Mid South and World Class matches. Saw some of the Von Erichs and Sting when he first started out. I could go on for ever, maybe I should write about the classics, have pics to. The days of the Chris and Gino and the Road Warriors, oh the memories.
