Take the time to put that extra thought into your gift giving. Don't hit the most expensive toy store in your area; instead put together a meaningful gift that the mother-to-be will cherish for years. You do not have to be the world's craftiest person to accomplish this, a little thought and effort will pay off in spades.
One of my favorite ideas revolves around giving the new mom some free time to indulge herself. Grab her family members and other friends and get together on this one. It'll make it that much more meaningful.
Each person puts together a gift basket based on one of mom's favorite things. It may be a tea sampler, a book by her favorite author or a basket filled with lotions and bath salts.
The idea is that the gift is geared towards the mom and not the new baby. Accompany your gift with a handwritten card explaining when you will be at her house for baby duty. In this way you give the mom not only a special gift but also some much needed time to pamper herself
Set up the schedule before hand to avoid confusion. Depending on the number of people involved it may work that each person takes one turn or, with fewer people consider that each person takes a second turn.
As a mother of four I've come to understand the importance of mommy time.
This is time that each mom should set aside to focus on herself, not her children.
When a woman becomes a mother for the first time she often shrugs off the idea of time for herself, thinking she'll have private time to focus on herself when her new little one is sleeping. Once into the endless cycle of childrearing the idea of personal time gets pushed even further back.
The new mom will get plenty of toys and gadgets for the baby from others. Let her know how special she is by giving her the gift of time.
