The Basics-Beautiful Lips from the inside out
- Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking six to eight glasses of purified water each day. Your lips need moisture from the inside out, and when you don't drink an adequate amount of water each day your skin suffers. Your lips can start to appear dry and crack.
- Avoid licking or biting your lips as this can cause irritation. Saliva also zaps moisture from your lips, making them dry.
- Always wear a lip balm with SPF 15 or greater for sun protection.
- When wearing lipstick use lip liners one shade lighter than your lipstick. Be sure to blend well so the line cannot be detected.
- Smoking can accelerate the aging process adding lines to your face and lips. If you smoke it might be a good time to kick the habit for the sake of beauty.
- The look of your skin hair and nails is an indication of how healthy you are. Start taking a whole food multivitamin and mineral supplement. Vitamins A and E are especially good for the skin and lips.
- Exfoliation
Exfoliation involves removing dead skin cells on the face or body by using a brush or a certain type of product.
To create kissable soft lips be sure exfoliate once a week. A great product for exfoliation is Philosophy Kiss Me Exfoliating Lip Scrub ($15.00; philosophy.com). This product is amazing because it is gentle, yet effective. If you are on a budget you can also exfoliate your lips the old fashioned way. Simply take a soft clean toothbrush, dab some Vaseline on it and scrub very gently. Then wash the dead skin off with water. Take your time, and be careful, the lips are delicate and sensitive.
Lip Plumpers
Lip plumpers can help you create fuller more exotic lips without plastic surgery. These products contain stimulating ingredients that increase blood flow to the lips. The result increases fullness by up to 30%. A favorite among celebrities is Too Faced Lip Injection ($27.50; toofaced.com). This product works within minutes and creates a mild tingling sensation on the lips.
Another great plumping product is Elizabeth Ardens Ceramide Plump Perfect Lip Moisture Cream SPF 30 ($27.50; elizabetharden.com). Ceramide helps provide hydration and smoothness to the lips. This is a great all in one product offering sun protection, plumping, and sheer gloss.
Both of these plumping products can also be found at Ulta, JC penny and other salons.
Cosmetic Treatments
When in comes to plastic surgery there are several options available to enhance your lips. Collagen injections are by far the least invasive treatment available because it doesn't involve cutting. A local anesthetic is applied to the area making the procedure virtually painless. There is a very low risk of scarring and infection and the results last an average of 9 weeks. Collagen is used as filler, which is meant to fix problems on the face and plump up the lips. The collagen is usually obtained from human donors, which is why some people shy away from it. However, doctors can also inject other things in the lips that have a similar effect such as Restylane, and Radiance.
Restylane- A clear gel derived from hyaluronic acid.
Radiance- A white gel derived from calcium hydroxylapatite.
Best lip stick colors for your skin tone
Light or porcelain
If you are a fair skinned beauty that burns easily in the sun it is best to stick with more neutral colors like medium brown, pink, mocha, and you can usually never go wrong with light pink. It can be hard to pull off dark red lip stick with light skin; it all depends on your eye and hair color. Some fair skinned women look great with red, but they are very few.
Medium
The majority of women have a medium complexion. Women who have this tone typically tan in the sun and don't burn easily. The best colors for this skin tone are deep reds, browns, deep pink and caramel shades.
Yellow
If your tend to have yellow under tones, colors that complement your skin are the darker berry shades, deep browns, dark deep reds, and browns with a burgundy under tone.
Dark Tan
If your skin is dark you have a lot of flexibility when it comes to lip color. You can wear just about any color except bright pink or orange. The most flattering shades for dark skin are deep rich reds, deep plums, burgundy, and rich browns.
Whether you want to go extreme or all natural, these are just a few things you can do to achieve the look you want. Smile and let your beauty shine through.
