The Perfect Wife - Part 2

A 3000 Year Old Recipe Which Can Never Be Improved Upon

Charles Willoughby
There have been a couple of articles posted in this forum describing how to be the perfect wife. Concepts described range form total devotion to a husband and children to being totally devoted to a career and providing equal financial support to the family....and other concepts are in between these two.

Each of these contain attributes which are important and helpful in describing the 'perfect wife', but there is a far better time-tested description of the wife, woman and mother to which many us can relate and have been fortunate enough to know and love.

When reading this consider when it was written and interpret it into today's surroundings.

This description, which I have paraphrased below, is taken from chapter 31 of the book of Proverbs:

A wife of noble character...is worth more than rubies..

Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value..

She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life...

She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands...

She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar...

She arises while it is still dark, she provides food for her family....

She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks...

She sees that her trading is profitable....

and her lamp does not go out at night....

In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers...

She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy...

When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet....

She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple...

Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land....

She makes linen garments and sells them...

Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in times to come...

She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue...

She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness....

Her children call her blessed, and her husband also praises her....

Many women do noble things , but she surpasses them all...

Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised...

Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring praise at the city gate...

It has been said that how we live and and the success of the world is dependent on our wives and mothers.

I believe that is largely true.

I've always loved this passage. It shows that the prevailing social attitudes toward women during biblical times (and still today) are not what God has willed for us!
