My first wish is that someone would come out with a public service campaign that explains that ulcerative colitis is not a disease that is contagious. In my perfect world, this campaign would teach people about these types of conditions, including the unpleasant symptoms. I think that this would help people to gain understanding. This, in turn, would make life easier for people with ulcerative colitis.
I wish that there would be more rest areas along the highway. Some gas stations require you to make a purchase before you can have access to the rest room. This is impossible when you have ulcerative colitis. I am well aware that law makers would rather spend money paying for their perks than they would spending it on things like this but, hey, this is my wish. Keep in mind that I am not asking for an elaborate rest area. Just a couple of clean toilets and a sink would work for me.
I wish that finding food that doesn't trigger a flare up was easier to find in restaurants. This is especially true when I go to fast food restaurants. Not only would this help out those of us who can't eat greasy foods and certain other things, it would also help others to eat a healthier diet. Fast food places could easily incorporate things like steamed vegetables into their menu. They could even microwave them to make cooking them easier. I know that an advance has been made in some fast food places since they have begun to offer fruit in place of french fries with kid's meals.
I wish that someone would work on forming a national support group for people who have ulcerative colitis. Once formed, the support group could host conventions around the country. This would be a perfect time for those of us who suffer from ulcerative colitis to exchange ideas and methods for coping with symptoms. It would also give sufferers a chance to get to know one another so that we could form a stronger support system.
I wish that researchers could come up with a treatment plan that works for everyone with ulcerative colitis. This would take a lot of the guess work out of finding a treatment plan. It would save us a lot of aggravation.
I know that these wishes may be a little far fetched but, these are all things that I think about daily. I know that they would make my life a lot easier.
