The Perks of Being a Wallflower

It's Hard Being a Teenager

James Kings

The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky, sells for $13. The back cover compares it to the The Catcher in the Rye. I had my doubts, even when my friend recommended it. Still I picked up a copy and paid the $13 at the bookstore. Amazon.com sells it for $10.92, plus s&h.

At once, the reader is wrapped up in Charlie's story, which he narrates. He's an awkward kid starting highschool in the 90s. The times described are all too real for the generation that grew up in them and are still relevant today. The book tackles issues that previous authors were unable or unwilling to tackle: homosexuality, date rape, drug use. The list goes on, but I won't ruin the book and tell all.

I would recommend The Perks of Being a Wallflower to anyone. I've offered to lend it to all my friends already. It's definitely worth the $13, and if you're broke-like most college students-ask the librarian to acquire a copy through the university library loan system. It's an easy read and I do consider it worthy of its comparison to The Catcher in the Rye.
