The Personal Experience: Two Easy Ways to Free Laundry Days

Amy Barnes Reports: "My Friends Pay Nothing to Do Their Laundry!"

Laundry services can cost you an arm and a leg, so here are two easy ways to cut down costs:

1. Buddy up with someone who has their own private washer and dryer, and exchange services or make laundry day a social day - this will save you the most money.

2. Partner up at the laundromat with others and split the costs. But be sure to mark clothing tags so you don't lose anything more than your quarters and laundry soap.

This arrangement works best with close friends, but can also work with trusted neighbors or coworkers.

To really chisel down the laundry budget, an apartment buddy can install a private washer and dryer to take advantage of the flat, unlimited, water bill per month and run a service out of the unit - water is often not regulated or limited in apartments, and the other tenants will be sharing the bill.

A homeowner can take advantage of the sun and run laundry lines out on poles in a yard for free drying of clothes. For additional savings, solar hot water can be used to hand-wash small (single-outfit or single-article) or delicate loads. Simply hook a dark barrel or container to a water supply and feed it out to a hand-washing tub and enjoy the workout that will save you money and help you burn both stress and calories through the exercise. This method is also used in camps and RV parks.

  • The buddy system can save you $6 to $10 or more, per load of laundry.
  • Homeowners can hang laundry lines and dry clothes for free using the sun.
  • Apartment dwellers can make money by running a private laundry service.
Hanging your clothes to dry carries the risk of bleaching from the sun's rays, but also extends the physical life of clothes because mechanical dryers can wear clothes down quickly.
