Romantic Phantom of the Opera Costume
To make a Halloween costume from the Andrew Lloyd Webber's romantic version of "The Phantom of the Opera," find a white shirt with a wing collar, a long black frock coat, black pants, a colorful double-breasted vest, some black leather or vinyl gloves and a silk or polyester scarf. After putting on the shirt, tie the scarf loosely around your neck. Also find a white Phantom of the Opera mask to cover only part of your face. The mask can cover either the right side or the upper half of your face. Add a long black opera cape to make your romantic Phantom of the Opera costume complete.
Horror Phantom of the Opera Costume
To make a "Phantom of the Opera" Halloween costume based on Lon Chaney's character in the 1925 film, get a white shirt with a wing collar, a black fedora hat, a black cravat, a black vest, a black frock coat and a black opera cape. Wear high-heeled black men's shoes. Tie the cravat into a loose bow around your neck. Wear a black beanie cap underneath the fedora hat. Underneath the cap and hat, wear a bald cap with hair around the edge. Use cotton prosthetics, nose wax and liquid latex to build up your brow, cheeks and nose. Make your nostrils huge to mimic the nose being cut off or missing, then paint dark makeup around the nostrils. Also wear pale makeup and paint dark circles around your eyes. Wear crooked false teeth. If you like, you can also wear a "Phantom of the Opera" mask that covers the top part of your face down to the upper lip. However, be sure to remove the mask periodically so that your Halloween costume will be recognizable.
Christine Daae Costume
To make a Halloween costume based on The Phantom's musical protege, Christine, you'll need a long white dress with a corseted bodice, a flared skirt and off-the-shoulder sleeves. Attach a chiffon or tulle overskirt to the top of the dress. Use gold glitter fabric paints to paint starburst patterns on the overskirt. Wear your hair very curly, up in front and down in back, decorated all around with flowers. To make this a masquerade costume, wear a white and gold masquerade mask or get a mask on a stick and hold up to your face with your hand.
