The Philippines a Century Hence: Families in the Year 2110

The Present

Today, Filipino families are bonded together by strong ties to parents, relatives and siblings. It has been like that before the Spanish colonization era. The family is a very important part of the Filipino Culture.

We have our families with us and we know we can't live without them. Most of us live with them. But for some who can't because of important reasons, they maintain a healthy communication.

Our Families have been with us since birth. They nurtured us into what we are today. So in turn, we value them because we love them.

Distractions

There are many distractions today that divert our attention from our families. What used to be is not the same anymore for some cases because of these distractions.

Technology has its way of diverting attention of young people to screens and it keeps them there for hours. Rather than spending time with their family, like what it used to be, they spend less time, sometimes none at all. Technology has its perks and disadvantages. This is one of its disadvantages.

The Trend

As the years pass, some things change. Technology increases and people get more exposed to such. How did families change from back then to now? What are the things that changed?

The Philippines is a country of culture, there are changes in how things are but none are very drastic.

People used to spend a lot of time with their families when jobs were simpler to acquire and money is not a big problem. Now some work abroad - away from their families, to earn a living. Some leave the country and take their family with them but they leave their relatives behind. Families are more separated now than before, but fortunately they are not too separated.

People used to live closer to relatives. Now they are farther apart.

Children now are more oriented to technology. They spend their leisure times more often with the screen rather than with relatives. As technology change their interest change with it.

The influence of Technology

Technology is everywhere. It is present when you ride the bus, surf the internet or even when you read this paper. It has a great influence on what we do. Just imagine life back at the stone age.

The Future

Assuming that the trend follows its current path up to a hundred years into the future and if technology will have a lot of influence over people and what they want, and what they do, people would be more submerged into virtual things rather be involved with real things. There would be more distractions that would steal time for the family to be together.

The market would be more competitive making jobs harder to acquire. This would force a person to do anything that is necessary to earn for a living. Thus, working in a faraway place and leaving the family behind would be necessary.

Families in the future will be very different. As the technology that has a major influence in our lives will evolve, the way we will evolve too.

Predictions

Have you watched the movie Back to The Future II? Although not in the Philippine setting, it showed a prediction on how families would be in the future or at least how the writer predicts families would be.

The way of living would be very different as things would also be very different. In the movie, the interaction between family members is just the same. But if we compare how families are a few decades back with the present, we can say that the conceptualization of how families would be in the future is inaccurate.

From my point of view, life in 2110 would be on a faster lane. Small simple important things may be ignored - like a family that eats dinner together. People would be more engrossed in media. Virtual reality simulations are already taking a big step forward in movies and gaming.

On the other hand, families will still be together. If not they would still communicate with each other as they do today. Families are a very important part of our society and culture. Our lives revolve around it. If we continue to give it its due importance, the future will not hold a bleak promise for families.
