The Pizza Cat - Mythbuster

Our Cat Eats a Little Bit of Cheese Once in a While

Angie Grey
Our cat is a bakery cat, sometimes, he is a cheese cat, mainly. We still feed our cat regular cat food, the dry sort of cat rice, oat, and soy meal food available from the animal feed store. He will eat cat treats, however, his favorite treat is cheese. Our cat even likes to eat pizza, to our surprise. We realize that he might have jumped on a table as a kitten, and eaten some pizza, however, he no longer does anything like this at all. We consider ourselves lucky to have this cat, who eats less than 1/4 ounce of cheese or pizza topping per day, along with his regular food.

At times, this is a blessing, as we are given a daily reminder to eat our cheese, from our cat, who stretches out lazily, and ambiguously gazes at us while reaching a paw upwards towards whatever food we are consuming.

Today, I tried to feed him a bit of a bagel procured from a local bagel store, however, this was rejected. He has tried a little bit of a cheese bagel, especially liking the cheese topping, and crunching into the tiny bit of bread attached to it with a great deal of pleasure.

We are very careful to give our cat tiny bits of food, about 1/8 inch wide, 1/4 inch wide at the very largest of a thin cheese bit. Our cat only receives a few cheese bits, as these are easily consumable. Bite-sized morsels for a cat are good treats that are easier to bear the feline's rejection of.

Excuse me, I need to clean up a bit of dried-up hairball cat vomit from our carpet. This is what happens already, as he tends to gorge himself on cat food. A little bit of non-toxic cleanser and a sponge or a paper towel, and the mess is all gone. This feline tends to gulp down cat food without chewing much, if at all, which frequently results in this common behavior among tomcats which generally is not left in the litter box. Our cat is a great cat, however, not a perfect feline, which is why he lives with us less-than-perfect human beings.

One more reason to be very careful about feeding the little cat more than a few little morsels of cheese or mild, unspiced human food. We do not want catnip in our food, thus we do not insist that our cat shares our human tastes.

Sweets are another thing that some cats crave, and these must be limited. Our cat enjoys pie crust, sugar bread, buttered bread, and is finicky about what bread he will eat a doll-sized portion of. Offering a cat carob is an excellent substitute for the forbidden chocolate, which is something that cats must not eat. Some pet owners brush their cat's teeth, whereas other owners use cat treats that are tooth-brushing treats, in order to clean their pet's teeth and gums. Our cat lived as a feral cat for a while, after leaving the pizza parlor where he was living, and no longer allows anyone to brush his teeth. We have tried Greenies, the tooth brushing treat for cats and dogs as well as the Whiskas and the Pounce tooth-brushing treats for our cat, who willingly will crunch on either, or both of these indirect cat dentifrices. Cheese is also a mild anti-cavity dentifrice, which is a relief.

Your cat will hopefully benefit from these tips. You will benefit from your cat developing responsible eating habits. Your cat is capable of managing his or her own diet, as well as being a responsible feline where diet is concerned. A happy cat is a well-fed cat, not a well, fed cat.
