The Pizza Tracker

A Devotional About Patience

Paula Carpenter
Nevertheless I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand. -Psalm 73:23

After a week of long, sometimes stressful days, my husband I cancelled plans to go out of town for our wedding anniversary. The weather had already put a stop to the proposed Saturday morning golf game. The idea of whacking that little white ball in 26 degree temperatures certainly didn't rank up there in my top ten things to do for the week!\

Relaxed in the warmth of our living room, we discussed the selection of Friday night movies the cable company was offering. Laughing at the lack of choices, Mike went to the refrigerator and asked if I was hungry. "Are you cooking?" I countered. "Cause if not, I vote for ordering a pizza." Without a word, he handed me the phone.

Unable to locate a telephone book, I instead turned to the computer and looked up the number for Dominoes, which is the only pizza company that delivers in our part of the county. What I discovered on their website was the ability to look at coupons, build my own pizza, and add additional items, such as bread sticks or hot wings.

We quickly decided on a large hand tossed pie with beef, bacon and extra cheese. Hey, if I was going to be bad, I might as well go all out right? Hitting the submit button, a new screen popped up that claimed to be my pizza tracker.

In just a few minutes, the scrolling text informed me that someone named Matt had taken my order and was assembling my pizza. Another minute, and Matt had put it into the oven. I watched in total amazement (I'm easily amused) when 8 minutes later, the computer told me that my pizza was done and had been put into a box. Three minutes following that, and my "Professional Pizza Driver Roberta" was on her way to my house with my fresh, hot meal.

Mike went to the door and paid Roberta. Just about the time I heard her car door shut again, my computer assured me that my pizza had been delivered and asked me to please enjoy my dinner.

Can you imagine what life would be like if every situation had a pizza tracker? What if you could instantly look and figure out what God was doing in your life, without having to wait until the end? If this happened, how would our faith grow?

One of my favorite hymns is "I don't know about tomorrow." Mainly because, I am not a very impatient person. Many times, if the plot of a story is going to slow, I flip to the end of the book and read the last page. But in real life, I can't do that. But that song, along with David's words in the Psalm above, are a gentle reminder that even though I don't understand many things about the coming days, I don't have to worry over the future. All I have to do is hold HIS hand... he will never leave my side.

I'd never heard of the Pizza Tracker! That is very cool. I agree, there are times when it would be so cool if we could instantly know what God is doing in our lives. Very creative thinking!!

SO good. You're really gifted when it comes to writing these devotions. (Just as a sidenote, that pizza tracker sounds so cool.)
