The Pleasure of Recycling Jewelry

Take Old Unwanted Jewelry and Turn it into Something New

AC FITNESS BOY
A while ago I had some citrine stones that I had been given as a gift. I then had them lying around and eventually had them made into a pendant by a jeweler in town. Very happy with the results, I was inspired by the recent gold selling craze to come up with the suggestion that maybe people should take all their old jewelry and turn it into something really original by a jewelry re designer. If you look up jewelry re design on the internet you'll find people who do it.

I don't want to recommend specific designers. But if you look at what they do and see if they have references and have been around a while, you might be pleasantly surprised. If you had a broken tennis bracelet or a selection of colored gemstones, and some gold, you might have someone design a selection of more original designs. We might turn the tennis bracelet into a leopard, or the colored gemstones into a peacock. Or you could just make a bunch of different earrings and a solitaire necklace. Really, the options are endless.

If you want, you can go to a local jeweler you trust with some broken jewelry and see if they can help you. It is very satisfying and creative to take some lose jewels or broken jewelry and make something new. There are many reasons to consider this.

Gold can be melted down and redone many times. And the fact that gold is rare and valuable and causes harm to the environment when mined, you might want to redesign and recycle jewelry for ecological as well as monetary reasons. Also, having something no one else has is very rewarding.

Some jewelry designers work one on one with you. They can design something totally original. Otherwise, you can go to a regular jeweler and see what they can do. If you like being original and having something no one else has, this can be a great way to go. Also it is easier on the environment. You can even go on youtube to see what jewelry recycling can do to help protect the environment and make you feel good about your decision.

I like making beaded jewelry myself. But for those who want to be creative with gold and jewels, this could be a good way to get the materials to work with. Some people do this for a living and I think if you are a good jeweler, this could be good for the environment.
