The Plight of the Gadget Geek

Billy Kirk
OK, OK, I admit it. It's really no secret. I'm a gadget nerd. I'm totally crazy about shiny gizmos. Fresh phones, hot new game systems. ... I run the gamut in my obsession, and I don't discriminate or play favorites. I want them all.

Unfortunately, it's an unhealthy habit, especially when you can't afford to have them all. It isn't like that makes matters any easier. I'm sitting here on the fence about the iPhone, and while I could purchase one, what's the point? It wouldn't sate my desire one bit. I once took an online personality test that told me I liked toys. Moreover, that this interest would not die off at any point, and that getting one "toy" won't slacken my thirst. After a short time, I'm the type, apparently, that needs something new and even shiner. I get bored quickly.

For instance, I have both an Xbox 360 and a Wii. Seeing as I had the 360 and the PlayStation 3 is geared towards the same target demographic and thus shares some of the same games, I figured I wouldn't have a need or a lust for the PlayStation. Turns out I may be wrong on that one, too. Not only that, it could double as a dependable Blu-Ray player. My roommate currently rocks a 42 inch LG plasma in the living room, and true hi-def movies are something I go ga-ga over. Not surprisingly, I'm huge on cinema, and now that my HD-DVD player is defunct (yeah, I of course had one of those, too), it only makes sense to rebound with a Blu-Ray player. I mean, right? RIGHT?

The fact of the matter is, no matter what the gizmo, I'll convince myself I need to have it. A new cell phone. A new gaming apparatus. A new digital media player. A redesign or variation of a Macbook. (I already own a Macbook, but hey, why shouldn't I step up to a Macbook Pro, or even better, be all swanky and pimp the Macbook Air?) As you can note from my parenthesis, this problem just feeds upon itself, and even as I attempt to air out and solve my problem, I'm only reinforcing it. Heck, it's probably intentional on some sick, twisted sub-level.

This article is more of a personal diary than anything else, it seems. A plea for help, perhaps. Or just a coming out, a statement of affirmation to avoid the pervasively detrimental effects of denial. I'm a gadget geek. My plight is strong, and it's threatening to overwhelm me with harsh desires.

Someone tell me I'm not alone?
