The Poet Lariat

Karen Lech
POEM FOR TODAY:

This has been published in a number of anthologies. Not only that... it won a prize!
The reason I wrote it is because I was thinking about my poetry and thinking I certainly would like to be the Poet Laureate. (I met last year's poet laureate at a conference last winter, he was wayyyyyyyyy cool)

THE POET LARIAT

Open the cover,
Open the gate.
I am
The Poet Lariat!

I want to rope you in
with a lariat of words
The poems stampede
in a thundering herd.

Kicking up dust
in a arena of rhyme
Encircling you
Catching heart and mind.

And you may find,
As down you go,
Encouraging words
to soften the blow.
And words to spur your thoughts a bit...
Words of The Poet Lariat.

You may snort and buck,
And rear up at the thought
But, heart and soul will be soothed
When you're caught.

You then, inspired,
Word brands like fire,
are driven by my pen and wit.
On my paper saddle,
I'm reining in dreams,
I,
The Poet Lariat.
