The Police Reunite for 2007 World Tour

I'm into Classic Rock . I was watching Vh1 classics when it interrupted it's broadcast of "Woodstock" today for an important press conference. Now I would be perturbed by it except that I was given special impromptu mini-concert from L.A. by The Police. For those of you who do not know, The Police is the band before Sting. One way to test your skills is to ask who Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers are.

Their gig followed last night's opening to the Grammy's. Sting said that they liked what they did so much that they called the conference to play more, unrehearsed Police material, slyly slipping in that they indeed would tour. The tour is set to begin in on May 28th in Vancouver and continue in venues through October. The songs were interrupted by an officially speaking Arthur Fogel, Live Nation Chairman of Global Music, who announced that the tour start date and that it will continue this fall with dates in the UK and Europe, including appearances in Holland, Germany, Italy and France with additional countries to be announced. Additional dates in Mexico, South America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand are anticipated. "The anticipation and excitement to see The Police is overwhelming and I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of bringing the band to their fans worldwide," said Mr. Fogel.

The North American tour is presented by Best Buy, "The Police Live in Concert is one of the most anticipated musical events of this decade," said Gary Arnold, senior vice president of entertainment for Best Buy. "We are proud to be able to help bring this event to music fans and to be able to offer our best customers a chance to experience this incredible tour."

A portion of the proceeds from this tour will be donated to WaterAid, an international organization dedicated to reducing poverty by improving access to water, sanitation, and providing hygiene education. They are working in 17 of the world's poorest countries, and have already helped over 10 million people gain access to water and sanitation. They are committed to helping to reduce by half the proportion of people living without these basic necessities of life by 2015.

That is great tour stuff but the excitement was truly in watching the band play songs that they themselves hadn't yet remembered the parts. Now some would say that Sting reading the lyrics to "I Can't Stand Losing You" from a teleprompter is a bad sign. But given that he himself said the Police was something he ran away from for the last 25 years...well, we fans can afford the band some grace.

Overall the conference showed a funny quirky group of guys who are learning to work together again. And it seems they intend on enjoying the music for the music's sake this time around.
