The Politics of the Dixie Chicks

Sarah E Leach
What happens when our world turns it's back on its favorite daughters? And in this land of free speech and expression how is it possible for a corporation and a bunch of DJs to take a number one selling group and drop them down to almost nothing. That last part is a bit dramatic. The Chicks never hit rock bottom. The point is still the same.

This isn't the first time the "Music Industry" turned political. In my lifetime I've seen it happen to Cat Stevens twice. I am not sure why this man has become the favorite target of the music machine. He preaches love and peace yet all he gets is hate, boycotts and denied entry into the US.

What is wrong with us in the US? Why are the majority of people unwilling or unable to think for themselves? Why must we, as a people, be told what is right and wrong? And why is this great land of opportunity wasted on people unwilling to flourish?

I had this favorite t-shirt to wear; it said, "I see dumb people". The sad thing was that so many people loved and commented on it all the time without ever being offended. They assume that someone else was "dumb". It could never be them.

These are the same people that yelled at me when I was talking about how bad the "Patriot Act" was for our freedom. They stated things like, "I trust the President" and "I am willing to give up some freedom to be safe". Never once did they ask, "why did they attack us?" Don't get me wrong. I am not saying it's our fault that 9/11 happened. All I am saying is ask the hard questions… ask "why".

Think back to when you were young and fighting with a sibling. Most times that little brother didn't come up and hit you for no reason. Something caused that reaction, a broken toy, name calling, some kind of perceived wrong had occurred. Your sibling didn't just wake up and think I'm going to go hit him/her today.

Right or wrong, there is a reason they hate the US. What have we done to try to bridge that gap, to make things better? Where is the understanding in this world today? Where are the people willing to stand up for what they believe in? Where are the people willing to risk it all? This country and the world needs more people like the Dixie Chicks. Stand tall Ladies and walk on!

The Dixie Chicks got caught in the middle of a huge devisive nation. I think most of the ignorant people who opposed them are now seeing the truth. It's a hard pill to swallow to know that your government truly is that corrupt. When you have uneducated people on tv stomping on CDs and burning them they are just sad, pathetic and shouldn't have the right to vote on things they know nothing about. Free Speech will reign supreme because of the Dixie Chicks. They should be commended and I think the Grammy nominations are a screw you enough to the country music genre.
