The Pop Albums You Will Not Want to Miss: Fall 2009
A New Moon, Some New Material from Queens of the Pop Scene and a Siren that Will Not Be Ignored
The fall season is soon coming and it's filled with new music. Who will end up dominating pop music is anyone's guess. As a fan of good music all I can tell you is what I am looking forward to the most. Here are my top five pop albums that I can't wait to listen to come autumn.
5) Light and Darkness by Christina Aguilera
(www.christinaaguilera.com)
I have to admit Ms. Aguilera has really grown on me. While I was not a huge fan of her early albums or her dirty pop sound in 2002, I think, as she has gotten older she has gotten better. Her Back to Basics album was a lovely fusion of 20s jazz, funk and modern pop. I really dug it. Her new album is going to focus on the future and in an interview with yahoo music she expressed it was going to be the complete opposite of Back to Basics. I am a little worried but am also prepared to be pleasantly surprised by this lovely siren once again.
4) New Moon Soundtrack by Various Artists
(www.newmoonsoundtrack.com)
It might seem odd to put a soundtrack on the list for a movie we have not even seen yet. As I right this though the soundtrack for Twilight is still in the top 20 albums. Thom Yorke has also recently agreed to write a song exclusively for the movie. Muse has also agreed to put a new song on the soundtrack as will Band of Skulls. The folks who are making these movies know they are going to be a big hit with people who buy music and so they are going to work hard to make this soundtrack even bigger than the last. I am expecting big things.
3) I Told You I Was Freaky by Flight of the Conchords
(www.myspace.com/conchords)
They might claim to be just a folk band but this crafty duo is much more than that. First off they are two of the funniest people playing music today and there often sex themed songs are sure to make many folks giggle. Being funny would not be enough to make these Kiwi's as popular as they are, there songs are also catchy. They are a very talented anti-folk group that is not afraid to show their rock and hip-hop influences. Most of these songs have been heard before during the hit second season of this group's self-titled TV show, but there will be a few new songs as well. Many of the better songs have already been released on I-Tunes where they have been very well received.
2) Mi Plan by Nelly Furtado
(www.nellyfurtado.com)
So the obvious reason why this album is on my list is that Ms. Furtado is a gifted performer who has been able to mix all sorts of sound into very listener friendly music with blistering hooks. She all does this with a voice that is unique, sexy and smooth. Now the reason why some might over look this album is because it is in fact Nelly first all Spanish album but who cares. Half the population speaks the language anyways and even if you won't be able to understand what she is saying you will like what you hear. I have heard a few tracks from this album and as a man who doesn't know a lick of Spanish; I still found the songs to be amazing.
1) Bomb in a Birdcage by A Fine Frenzy
(www.afinefrenzy.com)
This fall will be the time when everyone who doesn't know how good A Fine Frenzy is, will find out. If you are one of those folks who don't know A Fine Frenzy is not a group but a girl by the name of Alison Sudol who is gifted with a great voice and songs that are pop poetry. Her first album only peaked at the lower 90s here in the US but since then she has been gathering a huge following. The first single from he second album, Blow Away, is already out and is very well liked. Everyone has most likely heard one of her songs on a TV show or movie but after this album nobody will ignore the girls amazing, emotional and catchy music.
