According to Wikipedia.com, popcorn is a type of corn which is able to heat the kernel to the point of explosion and as a result puffs up under the heat. Most popcorn has a higher fiber content, a low count in fat and calories, no sodium, is sugar-free, and is quite filling. Sounds great, right? Throw all of this into a diet and the popcorn diet is created!
Although the popcorn diet has its benefits, the diet is filled with blemishes and drawbacks. Granted, hot-air popcorn is extremely low in fat and calories. However, when most people purchase popcorn, salt and butter is on the popcorn. This type of popcorn carries the potential to carry more fat and calories than potato chips. Albeit, hot-air popcorn contains approximately 23 calories per cup. However, when butter and salt is added onto the once bland popcorn, the calories and fat grams grow immensely. In addition, too much corn in the popcorn causes the popcorn diet to become unsuccessful. When too much corn is present, the absorption of Vitamin B is blocked. When this Vitamin is blocked, one may experience depression, skin rashes, memory loss, anemia, and low energy levels. Moreover, corn is a common allergen and may produce the previously mentioned side-effects. Not to mention, the popcorn diet will spell failure if your body is unable to digest corn, which is also present in some individuals.
If you are looking to lose weight, using the popcorn diet may cause you to lose your health. The popcorn diet is not a long-lasting weight loss solution and should not be treated as one. The side effects are abundant and may result in serious health altercations. Popcorn can make a tasty snack, but the "tasty" part of the "tasty snack" is coming from salt and butter. Without those added ingredients, popcorn will become extremely bland and the popcorn diet will be less successful, if it was ever successful to begin with.
The verdict on the popcorn diet? Failure.
