Move over Channel, as The Pope's Cologne, a papal perfume inspired by a 19th century cologne worn by Pope Pius IX enters the intensely competitive fragrance market. Manufactured by California doctor Fred Hass out of his kitchen with help from his grand daughters, its described as "a fresh new fragrance from the past" smelling of citrus with a hint of violet.
Not A Product Officially Sanctioned by the Vatican
Perfume inventor, Hass came across the recipe for The Pope's Cologne in an old recipe book but after extensive research in the Vatican archives was unable to find other papal fragrances. This is not a product manufactured or marketed by the Vatican and some consider Hass' efforts sacrilegious. But Hass is a devout Catholic and has no malicious intentions.
Other Religious Items
In an interview with Bill Geist on CBS's Sunday Morning, Hass says he tried to get mainstream department stores like Nordstrom, Macy's, Barneys of New York, Sephora to stock the product. It's almost as if the product is too religious. But there is definitely a market for religious products. On-line stores like Monastery Greetings is stocking The Pope's Cologne along with other "products from monasteries, religious communities and hermitages." Bestsellers include Trappist Preserves, "Nun Better Cookies" from Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Fudge Royale from Brigittine Monks.
Who Would Buy The Pope's Cologne?
It begs the question, what is the market for people wanting to smell like the pope? Sex is what sells perfume so therein lies the problem. But what about celebrity? Celebrity sells and who's bigger than the Pope? Reporter Bill Geist in his exchange with Hass suggests a snazzier name like "Infallible" might help better sell The Pope's Cologne. Perhaps the television coverage on CBS Sunday Morning will help boost sales or are the truly faithful at church when the program airs on Sunday? The Pope's Cologne is actually a suitable gift for a Catholic priest, deacon, Catholic school teacher, church secretary, congregant or anyone of faith who admires the Pope.
