In this technological age there are a number of gadgets and devices that have made cooking more accessible than ever. Even those who have trouble with simply boiling water (and they know who they are) can pull off a decent meal using the multitude of tools and techniques that are available today.
From the low tech "For Dummies" series of books on cooking to the electronic media CD and DVD instructional offerings, one can learn to create a variety of ethnic dishes and no longer have to spend several hours and hundreds of dollars on cooking classes. The internet is full of websites of easily accessible recipes available for free and sites like Planet CD ROM (www.planetcdrom.com) offer a number of free software titles (you pay nominal shipping and handling) you can order for home delivery.
One reason some people today may be cooking at home more often is the benefit of saving money. Depending on what it is you are making, it can usually be cheaper to cook; especially if you plan your meals for the week to use some of the same ingredients and cook in large quantities so that you can freeze portions of food for later meals.
For anyone with particular dietary concerns or allergies, cooking at home can help insure you always have healthy meal choices. Many people can not have salt in their food and the healthy heart menus at most restaurants, in addition to being quite limited, just don't cut it. Preparing one's own meals using only the best healthy ingredients available insures diabetics and others will have the benefit of knowing exactly what it is they are eating while enjoying their favorite foods without risk.
Another possible reason for the popularity of cooking is likely the same as with any other trend - it's the "in" thing among young people. Every generation reaches this stage and whenever a young people discover something it spreads like celebrity gossip from community to community infecting nearly every household. Sit-down dinner parties are a perfect opportunity for teens and young adults to show off their grown up cooking skills to their friends when entertaining.
The ongoing and ever increasing population explosion may a little have something to do with cooking's popularity as more people means more mouths and more meals. The number of single and divorced people on the planet who are fending for themselves all need to eat and constantly dining out can get old fast, not to mention expensive.
Whatever the reason for the popularity of cooking, as long as humans have a need to eat there will be a need for a means of food preparation. Curiosity and ingenuity will continue to lead to innovation and more accessibility, making cooking more and more of a culinary adventure.
