According to a report released by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Waterborne Statistics Center the Port of Mobile is the ninth largest in the nation in terms of tonnage.

The $300 million Mobile Container Terminal opened in 2008 with the Alabama Port Authority contributing 50% of the funding. The $86 million Pinto Island Terminal built to serve ThyssenKrupp recently received its first shipment of steel.

According to an article published in the Mobile Press Register on March 9, 2010 the Mobile port moved 67.6 million short tons in 2008. Corp data measures just weight of cargo and not value. Jimmy Lyons, executive director of the Alabama Port Authority said the port handled less cargo in 2009 but he expects a rebound this year with a surge in 2011.

The TysennKrupp is in full swing in the beginning of 2011 it is expecte3d that they will increase tonnage by 2 million tons and that could move Mobile into the 7th most active port in the US.

When the widening of the Panama Canal is completed the port expects to have increased tonnage from China and the Far East.
