The Portrayal of Turner's Syndrome on Law and Order SVU

Christina Armani
Law and Order is a fictional show, and is one of the many medical dramas one can find on TV nowadays. In a recent season, Law and Order did an episode called "clock." Clock focused on a 17 year old female with mosaic Turner's Syndrome who was trying to get pregnant while she still could. Mosaic Turner's is an uncommon form of Turner's, and females without the Mosaic form of Turner's are unable to conceive on their own. While many young females with Turner's Syndrome may have trouble making friends and may not have the best social skills, they are by no means stupid or reckless. The truth is that females with Turner's Syndrome are typically wholesome, levelheaded and responsible. As a female who has lived with Turner's Syndrome for over twenty-five years, I was fairly offended by this episode and this portrayal of Turner's Syndrome. I found it to be very confusing and misleading since the episode didn't even mention the difference between mosaic and non-mosaic Turner's, or state the fact that around 90% of females with Turner's Syndrome are sterile. The girl in the show is mistaken for a minor although she is seventeen. While many females with Turner's Syndrome do look young for their age, a female on hormones isn't going to look like a child. A female with Turner's Syndrome can also speak for herself and state her age without needing someone to step in and say it for her.

The truth is that most teenagers don't want to have children, and many females with Turner's Syndrome are fine with the idea of adoption. If a young female with Turner's could have a child and wanted one, she would have the sense to talk to her parents or guardians about it and wouldn't do anything too drastic or extreme. The actress in the episode showed no common sense, but all the females I've talked to online who also have Turner's Syndrome have plenty of common sense.

While I am glad that Law and Order did a show on an extremely rare genetic disorder which will raise some awareness, I am displeased in the way they did it. None of the writers for the show did enough research on the genetic disorder, and I am very surprised that the Turner's Syndrome Society hasn't done any complaining about the show yet. I hope that they do one day soon since it was a terrible episode. I feel like while well intentioned, this article seems to assume that every sufferer of TS is a reasonable person with common sense and no character flaws. Human beings have hubris, and people with TS are no exception. The fact that the character had flaws means that they were well represented - as a real person, not a caricature designed to simply show people a typical presentation of the syndrome (you say yourself even that the presentation they used in the episode was very uncommon).

I'm sure they did too. Well the rare scenario of it was represented. It's rare for a female with TS to not be barren but it happens sometimes. I'm glad the episode raised some awareness though.

Hi, I do not have TS but I saw the law and order episode. I had never heard of TS but I am sure many people who saw that episode did what I did. I googled it to find out more information. I am sad for the fact that it was not represented correctly and while I do not completely understand what it's like to have TS, my heart goes out for those that do but I am glad I know about it now.

I have TS too. What upsets me the most is that I won't experience the joys and pleasures of trying to concieve. I am 28 and also look 19 or 20. It did a good job too but I still think they focused too much on Mosaic TS and most of us are not mosaic. I love hearing people say they think I'm 20. Yes we do and it has worked for the most part, we now have Obama as our Prisdent which is a big step forward.

As an infertile woman with Turner's, I can tell you this... if I could have gotten pregnant at 17, I would have. Irresponsible? Hell yes. But the truth.
I think SVU did an awesome job of portraying some of the challenges we face. And the general public is intelligent enough to know that it is fiction, and about one girl whose history and life is invented.
And another thing, why is the man in the show a pedophile? I am 27, but I look 20. Does that mean every man I've ever been with was sick? Or could it be that they recognized my inner intelligence and beauty? Dont we try to teach our children not to judge by skin, shape, and color?

the show was not saying that EVERYONE with Turners is dumb, honestly they weren't even portraying her as stupid at all. I simply saw a young girl In love with a pedophine, which SVU did before, and the girl before didn't have Turners. SVU specializes in special victimes including rape victims, what they portray in one rape victim in an episode is not saying that all rape victims are that way. SVU enlightened my knowledge on Turners because i have never heard of it before. They were not saying that everyone with this syndrome has the same situations as that young girl, she was a special victim with a special situation... :-)
I just think you took the show too seriously.
    Lighten up a little!
If I get offended by every show that shows an African-American with single-parent households, ragedy schools, or inproper English then it would honestly be me against the world...

They might not have gone into enough detail for the viewing audience or done enough research, but saying that everyone with a certain disorder is pure and wholesome is just naive, really. There could easily be some desperate young woman out there like the girl in the show. It's like saying every young woman is wholesome and that every teen does not want a baby, sure it's mostly true, but there are those out there that go against the grain.
