These games are very entertaining, and in turn have an extremely addictive side to them. Many people would argue that video game addiction is destroying the lives of many. I personally thought this at one point, because it seems as if the effects of being so addicted to video games are extremely negative.
Think again. After spending some time doing research, and being addicted to video games first-hand, I've discovered many things about video game addiction.
People are addicted to video games for a reason. Sometimes video games are even a gateway out of one's own life. This is actually quite common.
Safe Haven
Games often serve as a safe haven for people having difficulty in their own lives. It's unique that the fact that games can provide a safe haven, because it provides people with a sense of control. People can control the world in their game lives, and they can't in their own.
Many psychological addictions start with control issues, it's unique, because of the fact that games forming a safe haven is a much more healthy and safe approach at having a sense of control than some more common, dangerous ways.
Grades
Most people believe that grades fall as a result of being psychologically addicted to video games. This is true, but only to a very small extent.
You really have to look at the bigger picture. Perhaps these people actually are addicted to these games as a sense of control. Then the games aren't directly causing the problems, the stressed which causes the video game addiction is the real culprit.
Also, another great way to look at it is the fact that in most cases, games aren't priority. Students will work much faster and harder to get their work done and get good grades, just so that they can have more time to play their video games.
Social Aspect
There is a very large social aspect to playing almost all video games, especially online. People talk, meet up, start parties, and do multiple social things online. This is great for people because it gives them a chance to play while socializing with other players.
So don't believe that video game addiction is all negative. There are many positive effects to playing video games excessively. However, too much of anything is never a good thing, there are still great side effects of playing video games.
