The Potential of the Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo Can Bring Back the Classics

Jayson Alsbrook
The Nintendo 3DS. The newest product unveiled at this year's E3 conference. I must say that I am 20 years old and I do own a Nintendo DS. The only games I have for my DS are Pokémon Diamond and Heart Gold. Yes, I am a geek for the Pokémon games. As I watched the Nintendo press conference I was delighted to see the Zelda showing albeit the controls were all over the place due to "interference", however when I saw the 3DS, the first thing to come to my mind was "Wow. They can use this to possibly recreate old N64 games". Then they show good old Star Fox 64 coming to the 3DS. Then I think in my head, "This is the perfect opportunity for them to recreate the god of all video games...The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". As I check video game websites after the conference ends, my wishes came true. Ocarina of Time confirmed for the 3DS. That means a confirmation of me buying the 3DS system.

This is the perfect opportunity for Nintendo to bolster their revenue. To simply ship both Ocarina of Time and the 3DS together, similar to what they did with the Wii and Twilight Princess would send sales through the roof. I was nine years old when I first got my hands on the Deku Shield and sword and found my way out of the Kokiri Village". Thats eleven years ago, and I can guarantee you that to this day, I remember every detail of that game. I still have a Nintendo 64 in my house. It has 6 inches of dust on top of it and the power button is so sticky, an elephant could not push it up to turn on. The only N64 game I have left, that is by the way, still in the N64 is Ocarina of Time. I could not ever bring myself to throw away such a work of art. This is a brilliant strategy on Big N's behalf. They can easily repackage so many of their amazing Nintendo hits like Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooi, Super Mario 64, Majora's Mask, Mario Kart 64, WWF No Mercy (name change to WWE), Bomberman, and the list seriously goes on for another two and a half miles.

The Nintendo 3DS has the potential to win back a very large market video gamers ages 20-26 which is mostly composed of hardcore gamers. These are the games that made hardcore gamers hardcore. Just like I bought a DS only for Pokémon Diamond, hardcore gamers will buy a 3DS just for Ocarina of Time or No Mercy, or Mario Kart. Nintendo just hit a gold mine. I've never been a fan of the Wii. I own one simply for Twilight Princess. I honestly believe that the 3DS will simply topple the Wii. And let's not forget Golden Sun 3. Enough said.

Hi Jayson, This is so cool. I love the 3D part. I am going to click on the link in the end. Great review. Joanna

You do know that the DS was capable of playing ports of N64 games, right? I think the only one they ever ported was Super Mario 64, though, but that was one of the launch games. The 3DS will be capable of porting Gamecube games!
