The Potter's Vessel

Brendan W Vittum

"I went down
to the potter's house,
and, behold, he wrought
a work on the wheels.

And the vessel
that he made of clay
was marred
in the hand
of the potter...."

Mating instead
with cracked vessels
whose persona dominates
the softer pieces until
it cannot be denied
they do not fit.

The perfect match
lies
in the other shards
strewn
about the floor - but
even then pieces
made whole
through inexorable magnetism
rebreak in time
leaving the shattered
softness softer
still while other broken hearts
seek mending
through melding.

But Bones found
his half and in joining,
remaking the masterpiece
destroyed by the craftsman -
lest his art be lost -
destroyed the vessel
he meant to become.

Found, and
now finding all other forms
incomplete,
imperfect,
knows no vessel
will match these broken,
shattered
pieces ever again.

Verse comes from The Book of Jeremiah 18:3-4
