The Power of the Holy Spirit

Kevin Smith
In our quest to get closer to God and His kingdom, it is necessary for us to understand how He works and how we are supposed to operate to receive the full benefits of being a servant of His kingdom. I'm doing a series of articles about the Holy Spirit because He is the most important asset to Christian living, yet He is the most misinterpreted being in the Christian faith. First it is necessary to understand that God works in mysterious ways, and He may do things a certain way that we may not agree with, yet just because we personally don't agree with them, does not mean that they are wrong. Either way the Holy Spirit possesses the ability to get results.

When a Christian gets saved and is born-again through the acceptance of Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and savior, they receive the Holy Spirit or as some others would say, a power seed is planted in them. Without this power seed, Christianity would just be a regular religion. This is why the Holy Spirit is such an important being to Christians. According to Acts 1:8, Jesus told us that we would receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon us. The power didn't come until after we received the Holy Spirit.

Even if you haven't read the Bible yourself, you've probably heard about the story in Mark 14:66-72, where Peter, one of Jesus' disciples, denied knowing Jesus three times, and after the third time, Peter heard the rooster crow, and remembered that Jesus told him that he would do this even though Peter strongly suggested that he would never deny Jesus. Well this happened before Peter received the Holy Spirit. He did not yet have the power to be bold for God. Moving on to Acts 4:10 and 19, we see just how bold the Holy Spirit's power caused Peter to be. With the possibility of being persecuted for spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, he boldly advised his persecutors that regardless of what consequences he faced, he would not stop spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. That is the same Holy Spirit that we have today. The Holy Spirit always gives us things that are bigger than our own abilities to accomplish. It ensures Him in place in our life to help carry out those things that we are not able to do on our own. Think about the things in life that we thought were too big for us, but that we accomplished with a level of ease that we thought was not possible. Those are situations where the Holy Spirit's power is at work.

Speaking in tongues has always been a controversial topic in the Christian faith. Different denominations of Christianity have different views on speaking in tongues. Some say that if you can't speak in tongues that you do not have the Holy Spirit, but you have to have received the Holy Spirit first, before you can possess the power of tongues. Some people don't believe in speaking in tongues. The only problem with not believing in tongues is the truth that it is in the Bible. People who believe only some parts of the Bible but don't believe the others are the reason people call Christians hypocrites. You either believe all of it or you believe none of it, but you can't do both.
