The Power of Silence

Donna Cavanagh
The call came late from a friend far away
Asking me to stop her pain
A broken heart so torn apart
Looking for shelter from the pouring rain

There was no magic to repair this heart
Her voice echoed hopelessness and despair
How useless was I to this weeping friend?
I had no words of healing or comfort to share?

She talked for an hour and I said nothing
She ranted about lost love and regret
The ache she said was deep in her soul
This hurt she said she would never forget

I was beating myself up for not doing enough
And then she said thank you for being her friend
I needed to yell and scream without care
And now I know I will heal in the end

Sometimes it is the sound of silence
That provides the best consolation
Knowing someone is listening without judgment
Understanding pain without need for conversation

The power of friendship is at times mysterious
Two hearts linked by the strongest chain
When one heart breaks; the other becomes stronger
And sometimes in silence, it can ease the worst pain

Beautiful and right on. A friend is many many things and to have even one is a treasure.

So true. I have felt the same way when I want so badly to say the one thing that will make a friend (or daughter) feel better and can't come up with anything. Then I get a thank you for listening.

Donna, Your 'silence' article inspired me to write about the Sounds of Silence in Social Networking this morning and all the friends' voices I shall never hear! Cheers, girlfriend - off to church - I'll be back on later :)

I think of a friend as someone you can sit in a restaurant with and be content not to say anything..Good work as always!
