THE POWER of SPICE " GINGER " (Part 2)

J.C. JORDAN
Ginger (a perennial plant) is typically used as a flavoring in items like cookies, ginger ale, and gingerbread. Personally, I love seasoning my pot roast with ginger; and sage for a rich flavor and tender meat.

Ginger was used by the Ancient Romans for many ailments. Other than for cooking ginger may be used as a compress for inflamed joints, and it may be applied to the chest for colds, allergies, and bronchitis. Ginger is an anti-inflammatory. Ginger can aid in digestion and be used to freshen the breath. Ginger can also quell motion sickness, pregnancy related nausea and vomiting as well as nausea associated with chemotherapy.

There is also speculation that ginger may lower cholesterol and thin the blood which would prevent clotting which could aid in heart disease and strokes. It is also believed that ginger also has components that have anticancer activity though research is still being done.

Ginger contains: potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese and vitamin B6.
