THE POWER of SPICE '" "TURMERIC"

J.C. JORDAN
Turmeric is one of Asia's prized ancient remedies and has been used for more than 4000 years. Like cumin, turmeric contains a compound called curcumin; a powerful anti-inflammatory. Turmeric is chock full of antioxidants and we know that antioxidants help neutralize free radicals in the body. Turmeric is a yellow-gold colored spice that like paprika adds color to your food. Turmeric is used in most Indian curries for a distinctive taste.

Additionally, turmeric has multiple medicinal uses and has been used in Chinese medicine. As an anti-inflammatory it relieves the pain associated with arthritis, it is also suggested that it is a blood purifier, it aids in IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and indigestion. Turmeric can also be applied to the skin and used as an antiseptic. Researchers also believe that turmeric may work against skin cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer but more research is still needed.

While there are many other spices I have chosen the most popular for their medicinal attributes in this and my three prior "The Power of Spice" articles. Perhaps the medicine men and witch doctors of long ago knew a lot more than we gave them credit for.
