The Preciousness and Frailness of Life

The breath of life is so valuable, yet so many people take it for granted. Yesterday, I was faced with the preciousness of and frailness of life on two occasions, and it really made me think about life's value.

Yesterday morning I visited one of my friends and their premature baby who was born at 1 lb. 1 oz. She is now 3 lbs. 13 oz., but still struggling to stay alive. Their latest scare as of yesterday involved her ventilator tube that is helping her breath being yanked out and her heart rate and oxygen levels plummeting. She turned blue of course and her mom watched in horror. She is an amazing little girl, a living miracle. She has come so far yet has so far yet to go, but she hangs on to her own little life as so many pray that she will be able to live it to the fullest. We all know that God has a purpose for her and her life.

Later that day I get a phone call from my younger brother. My mom had been taken to the emergency room. Her heart was racing and she could not get it to stop. An hour later, as I watched her lie on the emergency room table, I could see the fear in her eyes as her heart still raced and her blood pressure surged way too high. Doctors finally had to give her some medication, which stops your heart and allows it to restart in order to obtain a normal heartbeat. My mom described how her oxygen level dropped and she felt like she could not breath as the medication took effect. Again, life was proven to me to be so precious and fragile.

Today I am thankful. Thankful that my mom is doing well and is home from the hospital now. Thankful that my 6-week-old baby does not have to live life everyday attached to tubes and lying helplessly in an incubator. I, at the same time, feel helpless. Helpless to help my friend who has to watch her daughter in this most fragile state and not know what the next moment will have her to endure. However, I know that God is in control; that He is the provider of life and that He is the ultimate decision maker of when He will choose to take the very life that He provided. It is all in His hands.

We as His children must be thankful for Him allowing us yet another day of life, with its trials and complications. No matter what it is still life, and that it is precious. Alyssa Avant is a Christian Author and Speaker who helps moms connect with their daughters.
