The Pregnant Man

Bryan Belrad
Thomas Beatie, due to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show later today, is a man with a baby growing inside him.

While many scratch their heads in wonder at how this could be, the answer is simple: Thomas was born as Tina.

After his wife had to have a hysterectomy, Thomas, who still has a uterus, offered to carry the couple's baby. It was not an act of glamour-seeking, but one of love.

An interesting twist to this amazing story: Now at five months along, Thomas's insurance company has denied him prenatal care on the grounds that the baby does not exist - men cannot carry babies, after all.

However, Thomas is not the first. Another man (who was born male) is also carrying a child, even as I type. Mr. Lee Mingwei, who was impregnated in an experimental procedure, is nearing his due date. The child, growing in his abdominal cavity, has been covered by both US News & World Report and USA Today. It is developing normally.

Mr. Lee's pregnancy is part of a groundbreaking program at the RYT Hospital at the Dwayne Medical Center - the same facility that, in an effort to find a cure for Alzheimer's, accidentally created a mouse with human level intelligence.

More information on Mr. Lee's pregnancy, and Clyven the mouse, can be found at RYT's website: www.rytHospital.com

Beatie's pregnancy is expected to become a media phenomenon after today's appearance on Oprah.

Of the three, Mr. Lee is actually the most "normal": Mr. Beatie is transgender, Clyven the mouse is transgenic; Mr. Lee is just pregnant. What could be more 'natural' than that?
