Interestingly, today's government is formed on the foundation documents that were written over 200 years ago by America's founding fathers. These core documents are the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of rights and the Constitution. The audacious statements in these documents describe the characteristic 'American persona' and the general sense of self.
American citizens possess an inherent sense of their rightful rights and their aptitude to function independently. This may seem perfect to American citizens but historically, it becomes incomparable because the government ruled with practically total authority and the citizens were obedient. A typical American will say that elected leaders are meant to work only for the public. That's the reason why if the leaders ever attempt to gain more power, the leadership of the country can easily be replaced. This is a very good thing as the citizens have acted as government watchdogs for the last two centuries.
The premise of America's free spirit was founded by The Declaration of Independence after it declared its Independence from England. The simple document brought about pride which influenced all aspects of private and public American life. The declaration ingrained into the soul of American citizens the sense of never again being dependent on any government, country or ruler.
To say the least, America's personality was transformed forever, which can only be seen by outsiders as a peculiar trait in American culture. The mere sense of self awareness and freedom justifies the reason why American movies, music, art and cultural life are so addictive and exhilarating worldwide.
Freedom from government dominance and oppression, and freedom to greatness is what was brought about by the declaration. The short-term aim of the declaration was to change the culture of impunity, but it accomplished much more as it instilled the spirit of determination and freedom into every soul of every American citizen.
Americans discovered that the government can actually be answerable to them, and not the other way round. Americans have been keeping their government on toes for the past 200 years, justifying the envy always written on the faces of other nations worldwide.
