The Presidential Debate

What was the Outcome?

Rose Richmond
My anticipation of the outcome of the debate was biased I suppose from the beginning. I have listened to John McCain for months now and the only difference tonight was the location and the other people in the room.

From the first question, he never actually gave an answer. He began by being accusatory of Barack Obama. That theme continued throughout the debate. Barack was said by some of the commentators to appear to be frustrated with John McCain. I guess it was hard to stand there and hear him continue to state untrue or half true statements.

That was the gist of his debate. Along with his travels to every country in the world and his naming of world leaders. Just a week ago, he didn't know Spain was a friend. When did learn all of the names of the other leaders?

On the questions of talking with Iran, John McCain said absolutely no meetings without pre conditions! Then he said sure we would talk with them on lower levels. Didn't he contradict himself there? He said he was absolutely sure that Henry Kissinger, his friend of 35 years would NEVER say to meet with them without pre-conditions, yet Katie Couric verified that he felt that way. She called Henry Kissinger when she interviewed Sarah Palin who said exactly what John McCain said. Yet both were wrong. He does think we should meet with any country that we have experienced a shutdown in communications with. Obviously John McCain didn't watch Katie's show.

My other serious misgiving with John McCain is the continuous lying or distortion of the truth. He insisted several times that Obama voted to not fund the troops. Obama said he refused the blank check that was attached to the bill and the unlimited time frame for the troops that was also attached. What McCain failed to say is that HE OPPOSED the same bill only because of the time frame that was being insisted on by the opposition. His convenient and selective memory was classic John McCain.

His repeated statement that it was incredible that Obama wouldn't acknowledge the success of the surge. He never once mentioned that Obama was right about not being there in the first place. John McCain voted FOR the war in Iraq. A war that was based on a complete and total LIE. If George Bush had not been seeking glory, he would not have LIED to America saying there were WMD's. Yet John McCain( a poor, tortured Vietnam Vet) never once stood up and questioned the war or questioned if there had been enough intelligence.

He jumped right off of the bridge with George Bush. The wind was once again blowing in the direction of what looked to be a hero move. Kinda like the move on suspending his campaign and canceling the debate. That was a wind to heroism.....Neither worked out to be that way.

His points on the President of Iran were so totally misstated, making it sound like Obama was an idiot. Even after Obama said he knew the surge helped, but the point was, Why were we there to begin with and why were we going to continue to stay there at our expense when they have $79 Billion dollars in holding.
McCain still tried to insist he didn't say what he said. Are you deaf John or is the hearing aid turned off? He wasn't arguing about the surge sir, he was telling you it was an unnecessary Lie perpetrated by you and others like you, led by George Bush.

Yet another annoyance with McCain is his constant Vietnam or growing up or this or that story we have heard the same or similar stories at least 1000 times so far in this campaign alone. What does any of that have to do with NOW? What does the fact that because he was tortured and then had the good sense to oppose torture from our own government have to do with anything? What do ANY of those stories have to do with you or I? Do any of those give him a plan to turn this country around? Do they give him the experience to rationally lead us for the next 4 years?

No! They only make him tough. Tough doesn't equate to smart! The voting record he bragged about so loudly and so many times was a joke. It doesn't equate to smart either. After he was a strong supporter for many years of the de regulation bills that got passed, which are by the way most of the reason the financial world as we know it may collapse, what would he want to brag about that for.

He turned down opportunity after opportunity to do something with alternative energy years ago. About 10 if I am correct to begin with and other opportunities after that, which is about the same number of years, the experts are saying would take us to independence to foreign oil. Where would we be today had John McCain been "THE MAVERICK" he claims he is now? About energy independent according to my calculations. What good was the mention of the record? I wouldn't vote for him based on that!

On every question tonight John McCain was flipping all over the stage. He was noticeably uncomfortable. He was redundant all the way through. He never looked up at Obama once to meet him eye to eye. My dad always taught me to believe that a man who refuses to look you in the eye when talking, confronting, apologizing or whatever has something to hide or is a weak man. You decide which one you think John McCain is.

Could he look the President of Iran in the eye and talk to him like a man or will he continue to talk with his head hung down?

Was he broken as a man when in Vietnam. That is the sad thing here. John McCain did serve in our military. As with every single man or woman who has ever served, there is not greater honor. His service and his experience in Vietnam, no matter how irrelevant to this election was worthy of praise and honor.

However, as a President, I want a strong, intelligent person who is confident in their ability to work to solve the problems of this country. As a Republican, I was hoping to see John McCain come in with a plan and not be accusing and trying to entertain. He failed to deliver for me. He chose to once again, cloud the real issues with lies and half truths.

I can't see John McCain as our next President. He is arrogant and if you were listening, he said he would freeze everything but Defense, veterans affairs, and entitlements. What? What happens to to everything else? It just stops operating because you said so John?

Had John McCain came in with solid points and not that familiar cocky attitude that we have been dealing with for 8 years now, I might have reconsidered my position. His attitude, his insistence on repeating crap, his constant inability to actually give an idea of what he would do, (other than freeze everything). His inability to look either the camera or Obama in the eye and a somewhat already annoying tic. Those lips, and that tongue. What is up with that lizard like horrible tongue in his mouth.

Honestly, if we are to be trivial about who we vote for based on some of the ridiculous things people are saying, this is something that would absolutely affect my vote. His constant blinking and chipmunk jowls are enough to irritate while he is talking, but that tongue is intolerable. I cannot look at him talk for 4 years. I would not be able to concentrate on what he is saying.

All kidding aside, this election is so critical to America. The World is watching to see how we respond. Are we ready to be the underdog again in this country because we have alienated the world with our attitude? John McCain can spout foreign policy experience and recite the names of 3 leaders in one sentence, but given his hot headed RECORD, his constant flip flopping on any issue and his reluctance to advance into the 21st century way of thinking is the sign he will only do more damage to this country.

We cannot afford any more damage. We are going to be very blessed to recover from this crisis facing us today. Did you hear John McCain offer any details about any solutions other than the freeze and to continue to give tax breaks to the wealthy? I didn't. He didn't offer any. He just jabbed and ducked.

The debate made my decision solidly for Barack Obama. As an American first and Republican second, I am voting for Barack Obama. No question.

  • Debate sent clear message of who has the ability to solve real issues
  • John McCain is so good a blame and game
Barack Obama did say the surge had helped, but he also said, we shouldn't have been there in the first place. Truth!

I thought they both did a good job. What I liked about it was they actually showed their true colors as politicians. McCain's answers were those of a conservative Republican, and Obama's were those of a liberal Democrat. When you consider their proposals for our country, I will definitely be voting for John McCain because I believe in less governmental control and all that goes along with it. If you agree with Barack's liberal plans, and believe the government should be bigger and have more control, vote for him. They both laid out where they stand very clearly. Since they are on opposite ends of the spectrum on most issues, it's not that hard to figure out which one lines up with your personal beliefs as a voter.

Sorry Kim, I can't agree. I don't want more government control, but come on. George Bush Republican is nearly living in our homes with unncessary intrusions. Had McCain voted for more regulation on the banking and financial industries, we would not be in this crisis today. You have to have some government oversight because people are crooked. Look at Enron and many others. They were given a blank check to screw America. McCain is all for big money because he is part of their clique. You can't give people free reign and think they will not be out for themselves. This mess we are in is directly related to the principals John McCain lives by. How could you trust a man who changes his mind with every passing breeze. He is a fence straddler and will always be that way. I am sorry you are so uniformed here. I hope you don't regret your decision. I remember a Great Republican leader Ronald Reagan. McCain is NO Ronald Reagan. He couldn't even try on Reagan's shoes, much less walk in them. He i

I have been reading about people's reactions ever since the debate ended. It is very interesting to get AC writers' takes compared to television coverage - which has been all over the place in claiming who is "the winner". - but the voters have their own say :)

Dear Rose: Right on! I cannot believe that no one "called" McCain on his obviously uncomfortable demeanor. He reminded me of "W" in the debates he was in. Obama was, in my view, better prepared, more easygoing and confident and leader-like and, once again, proved that he is the man we need to elect. Good job!

I love your article!!!!!! I'm so glad to hear this from a Republican who does not support McCain but will vote for Obama. Anxious to read more of your views as they are very similar to mine. I will be visiting your page and hope you will check out mine too!

Arrogance and bullying the people into getting your own way is no way to run a country-it's been proven by our current Administration.
