The Price of Living in a Perfect World

Another Rant on Personal Freedoms

Pattie Byrd
Years ago, there was this creative movie entitled "Logan's Run" in which everyone lived a sort of idealistic life because everything around them was structured to take care of them. Of course, there were a couple of bad points, one of which was when you hand started blinking, but up to that point, a person's life was pretty much filled with tranquility and self-pleasure. Basically, they just meandered through life accepting the status quo. If you haven't seen it, I think you might enjoy it.

I was reminded of this after reading Memmay Moore's article, Florida High Schoolers Propose Law Against Smoking with Kids in the Car, where a class of concerned young people have presented the idea which is now a bill being proposed in the Florida Legislature. While I think these kids get an "A" for creativity, I think if this passes, the Legislature should fail miserably.

Children's welfare should always be a primary concern, but I say let's just stop all this dilly-dallying and as they do in their poker shows, go all in. Since personal freedoms seem to be flying out the window because we don't know how to take care of ourselves anymore, I say the government should develop a manual to be given to each person living in this country. After all, they seem to have all the answers.

Also, each person can be assigned a personal aide provided by the government to contact in case they have a question when making a personal decision, such as McDonald's or Chili's for lunch. That aide could also be contacted when you're thinking about getting together with someone to see how compatible you'll be, sort of like a character/personality check. Those romantic notions can often mislead you, and just think of the time and grief that will save us.

Just think of the new jobs this will create. Beside writing the manuals, people will be needed to produce and distribute the manuals. I figure there will need for at least one aide for every two people in this country. That right there will help in the employment figures, and although it will cost a little more in taxpayer money, there seems to be plenty of it.

And let's not forget about the extra people hired to police this manual's regulations. I mean, what's the point of making new laws if we can't be sure people are abiding by them. Heaven forbid we have laws on the books that we can't enforce.

Of course, a lot of these people will only be needed until we can get all the surveillance in place and that little glow-in-the-dark jewel in everyone's hand, such as in the Logan movie. Then everything can be monitored by a select group of people sitting in front of a computer. Give it a couple of generations, and people won't remember any difference.

Well, let's see, no more decisions to be made, everyone's welfare will be maintained, employment numbers will skyrocket, and we'll all live in peaceful contentment. Yeah, that pretty much covers it. Oh, I did forget to mention that in the movie, Logan actually ran away from his perfect world. It seems that when your gem starts to glow, it's your time to fly off into the great after-world. I think he was turning 30 years old.

I think the more you have to lose, the more afraid you become of losing it. Nice job!

Excellent ideas! If smoking is the great evil then just make it illegal and be done with it...unfortunately it generates too much money in tax revenue.

But who will be the aide to the aides? I agree that passing a law requiring you to use common sense is ridiculous.

It is a big jump to go from legislation protecting children from the dangers of second hand smoke, to a government that controls all behaviors and actions. Interesting to tie the legislation to the movie Logan's Run though.
