The Price You Pay for Being a Workaholic

Todd Hicks
If you have a job, are you consumed with it? Do you work a heavy schedule or do a lot of overtime while rarely taking a vacation? Although your career is your livelihood and should not be taken lightly, it is imperative to not become obsessed with it. You will learn the disadvantages of being a workaholic.

The first: You are likely to become physically tired before the end of the day. It is vital to periodically take breaks and not work too many hours, especially if your position includes a lot of physical labor. The main key is to always get enough rest.

The second: You will probably become mentally tired and lose your concentration. The longer you work nonstop, the more likely you are to stop thinking clearly. Once this happens, your productivity will decline.

The third: You are likely to become irritated when you make an error or things do not go smoothly. Although it is not necessarily bad to be a perfectionist who has a big desire to succeed, you must not become obsessed with being perfect.

The fourth: You do not have enough free time. You should set aside at least a few hours throughout the week to do the things you enjoy. If you have to take a job that offers a normal eight-hour day and cut back on working overtime in order to have enough time for leisure, so be it.

The fifth: You could become addicted to your work as a result of considering it your number one priority. Although you might need to work in order to pay for food and shelter, it is essential to make sure you have a life. As they say, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

The sixth: You will probably become stressed out. The more you tax yourself, the more tense you are likely to become. If you reach this point, it is necessary to take time out. If you start to feel too excited to get your work done, you should take a few deep breaths and relax.

The seventh: You might become divorced, assuming you are married. Your family must come before your career.

The eighth: You could lose some of your friends. You should spare at least fifteen minutes a week to talk or be with each one of them.

You have learned the disadvantages of being a workaholic.
