The Problem with Illegal Immigration

Bernard Zeitler
There are arguments nation wide about a law passed in Arizona which is meant to help them enforce Federal Rules. All nations have rules for how you can and can not resettle within their borders when conning from another country. The Immigration Law provides the rules for the free movement and or relocation of foreign nationals.

Here in Michigan it is no different. We have had protests and support rallies for the Arizona Law. This has become even more poignant with a Michigan Legislator looking to follow the lead of Arizona.

To clarify the meaning of "Illegal Immigration" it serves us well to look at Webster's Dictionary definitions.

  • Illegal - Prohibited by Law. Against the law.
  • Immigrant - one who immigrates
  • Immigrate - to come to a new Country, etc., esp. to settle there

Many countries are far harder on people who are not from there country when they are trying to move there or even visit. Mexico's President recently railed against our Immigration Laws and the Arizona Law. It does not sit well with me that Mexico undermines our Laws while they are far harsher on immigrants legal or otherwise. It also serves us well to look at Federal Immigration Law and note that Arizona is only giving their law enforcement the ability to enforce the Federal Law. It is not a license to ask just any one for proof of citizenship. There has to be another reason for the interaction before the request is made. The Arizona Law also is only an enforcement tool and by nature is not discriminatory. For that matter every nation has a paramount responsibility to protect national security ant being vigilant with finding illegal immigrants is a large part of this.

By definition an Illegal Immigrant is someone who has broken the law by not following the rules for being here. The very nature of Illegal Immigration is that the LAW has been broken.

If we are to believe the laws are correctly written then enforcement must be done. Would we allow someone to commit murder and excuse it by saying "Oh, they have already done that so we can't do anything about it?" .I know this is an extreme example, but in light of 9/11 that is what I feel we are preparing to do.
